Before and after examples

Example images are AI-generated: both the sample houses and their redesigns. Results change from render to render, so treat them as concepts, not exact product matches.

AI-drawn generic stand-in of a two-story suburban house with beige vinyl lap siding, white window trim, a dark gray roof, a gray front door and a concrete drivewayBefore
The same house with muted sage green vinyl lap siding; the white trim, gray roof, gray front door and driveway keptAfter
Example 1 (prompt 1 below; the before is an AI-drawn generic stand-in house, not a real photo): beige siding became a muted sage green. The white trim, the gray front door, the roof and the driveway look the same. The green is the model's guess at "sage"; a real vinyl color will differ, so order a sample.
AI-drawn generic stand-in of a one-story ranch house with white vinyl lap siding, white trim, black shutters, a gray roof and a white garage doorBefore
The same house with deep navy vinyl lap siding on the house and the garage wall; the white trim, black shutters, white garage door, roof and driveway keptAfter
Example 2 (prompt 2 below; the before is an AI-drawn generic stand-in house, not a real photo): white siding became a deep navy, on both the house and the garage wall. The white trim and garage door stand out more against it. The black shutters nearly disappear on a dark wall, which is worth noticing before you choose a dark color.
AI-drawn generic stand-in of a two-story colonial house with light blue vinyl lap siding, white trim, a black front door and a brick walkwayBefore
The same house with warm tan-beige vinyl lap siding; the white trim, black front door, roof and brick walkway keptAfter
Example 3 (prompt 3 below; the before is an AI-drawn generic stand-in house, not a real photo): light blue siding became a warm neutral. We asked for greige, a soft gray-beige, but the result reads more tan than gray. The trim, the black door and the walkway are unchanged. Say "gray-beige with a cool undertone" if you want it grayer.

What the AI can and cannot do

It can recolor the siding in your photo while usually keeping the shape of the house, so you can compare colors before you order samples.

It cannot match a real manufacturer color, check fade or heat ratings, or follow every instruction exactly. In our examples it drew its own version of sage, and a requested greige came out tan. Check the whole image and name what must stay the same.

How to choose a vinyl siding color

The points below come from four published sources: Fixr, "Vinyl Siding Colors" (by Carol J. Alexander, March 2024; a site that connects readers with local pros); PJ Fitzpatrick (a siding installer; no date shown); Ply Gem (a siding manufacturer; no date shown, built on a Sherwin-Williams 2025 forecast); and ProTradeCraft (by Fernando Pagés Ruiz, August 2015; no products sold). Two of them sell siding and one is a lead site, so treat the color advice as sales-adjacent.

QuestionWhat the sources say
Which color families?Neutrals (white, tan, beige, gray), greens, blues and dark tones (Fixr). Ply Gem groups them as earthy neutrals, blues and greens, bold contrast, and cozy neutrals with bold accents.
Resale and upkeepFixr calls neutrals the best choice for resale and says white shows dirt, mold and mildew, so it is rarely recommended.
Sun, heat and fadingPJ Fitzpatrick suggests lighter shades for homes with a lot of sun. Fixr says modern vinyl is designed to resist fading and advises comparing fade warranties. ProTradeCraft says to look for the ASTM label and the Vinyl Siding Institute color-wheel logo.
Dark colorsFixr quotes an expert who says dark paint over light vinyl can absorb heat and warp the siding. Ply Gem says its reflective technology is built for dark colors.
Home style and settingFixr says architecture guides color (mid-century homes often use ochre, olive or gray) and that muted greens, taupe and gray help a house blend into its landscape.
Roof and trimPJ Fitzpatrick pairs a gray roof with blue, white or green siding and a brown roof with tan, beige or cream.
Testing a colorFixr says colors look lighter outdoors than on a chip and suggests testing samples on all four sides of the house at different times of day.

Three vinyl siding colors to try

  • Muted sage green. Example 1 turns beige siding green and leaves the white trim and gray door alone.
  • Deep navy. Example 2 turns white siding navy. White trim reads crisply, but dark shutters nearly vanish, so test contrast.
  • Greige. Example 3 turns light blue siding into a warm neutral. It came out more tan than gray, so describe the undertone you want.

How to try a siding color on your house

The examples were run directly on an image model, not through the tool above, so your results will look different.

  1. Photograph the front in daylight, straight on, with the whole house in the frame.
  2. Upload it in the tool at the top of this page, or open the exterior designer, and choose a style.
  3. Name the color and what must stay the same, like the prompts below.
  4. Compare two or three colors and note which parts moved.

The exact prompts behind the examples

These are the edit prompts used for the three examples, word for word. Swap in the color and the list of what stays.

Prompt 1: muted sage green

Change ONLY the color of the vinyl lap siding: repaint it a muted sage green. Keep the white trim, the gray roof, the gray front door, the driveway, the lawn and the camera angle exactly the same.

Prompt 2: deep navy blue

Change ONLY the color of the vinyl lap siding: repaint it a deep navy blue. Keep the white trim, the black shutters, the roof, the white garage door, the driveway, the lawn and the camera angle exactly the same.

Prompt 3: warm greige

Change ONLY the color of the vinyl lap siding: repaint it a warm greige (a soft gray-beige). Keep the white trim, the black front door, the roof, the walkway, the lawn and the camera angle exactly the same.

Before you order siding

  • Get real samples and look at them outdoors, on every side of the house.
  • Compare fade warranties and ask about heat limits for dark colors (Fixr, Ply Gem).
  • Check your HOA or town for color rules.

Who this is for

Frequently asked questions

What are the most popular vinyl siding colors?

Fixr groups popular vinyl colors into neutrals (whites, tans, beiges and low-saturation grays), greens, blues and dark tones. Ply Gem names four families from a Sherwin-Williams 2025 forecast: earthy neutrals, blues and greens, bold contrast, and cozy neutrals with bold accents.

Does vinyl siding fade?

Fixr says modern vinyl is designed to resist fading and suggests comparing fade warranties. A 2015 ProTradeCraft article says newer manufacturing has greatly reduced fading, so its comparison with older siding is dated.

Can dark colors warp vinyl siding?

Fixr quotes an expert who says dark paint over light vinyl can absorb heat and warp the siding, and that some warranties exclude it. Ply Gem says its reflective-technology siding is built for dark colors. If you want a dark house, ask the maker about heat-reflective colors.

Should I check my HOA before picking a siding color?

Yes. Fixr and PJ Fitzpatrick both say to check HOA rules first. Even without an HOA, look at the neighborhood.

What roof and trim colors go with vinyl siding?

PJ Fitzpatrick pairs a gray roof with blue, white or green siding and a brown roof with tan, beige or cream. Ply Gem suggests dark shutters, a bold door or contrasting trim as accents.

Can I see a vinyl siding color on my own house first?

Yes. Upload a photo of your house in the tool at the top of this page and name the color to try. A render is a guide only; test real samples outdoors on all sides of the house.

Will the render match a real vinyl color?

No, not exactly. In our examples the model drew its own idea of sage and greige. Use the render to narrow your choices, then compare real color samples.

Is this tool free?

Signing up is free and gives you 5 credits, which is enough for 2 renders in most countries. Free renders carry an AiExterior watermark. If you want more renders or clean images, paid plans are available on the pricing page.

Do I need an account?

Yes. You need to sign in before a render starts, with an email code or your Google account.
