Exterior House Colors With a Brown Roof: See Them on Your House

If your roof is brown and not changing, the wall color has to work with it. Before you buy paint, you can see sage green, navy, warm tan or another color under your own brown roof with AI. This page shows three examples on stand-in houses, lists what two published guides suggest for brown roofs, and tells you what a render cannot show.

Before and after examples

Example images are AI-generated: both the sample houses and their redesigns. Results change from render to render, so treat them as concepts, not exact product matches.

AI-drawn generic stand-in of a two-story house with beige horizontal vinyl siding, white window trim, a white front door and a medium brown asphalt shingle roofBefore
The same house with sage green siding under the same brown roof; trim, door and roof keptAfter
Example 1 (prompt 1 below; the before is an AI-drawn generic stand-in house, not a real photo): the beige siding is now a sage green, a medium green with a gray cast, a little stronger than the "soft muted" we asked for. The white window trim, the white front door, the brown roof and the walkway stayed in place. Unrequested change: the grass was redrawn, so the lawn texture is not the same as in the before.
AI-drawn generic stand-in of a two-story house with white horizontal vinyl siding, white window trim, a dark brown front door and a medium brown asphalt shingle roofBefore
The same house with deep navy siding under the same brown roof; white trim, dark door and roof keptAfter
Example 2 (prompt 2 below; the before is an AI-drawn generic stand-in house, not a real photo): the white siding on both floors is now a deep navy blue, and the white window trim, the white porch posts, the dark brown front door and the brown roof stayed in place. Unrequested changes: the lawn was redrawn, the shrubs along the wall are drawn a little differently, the black wall lantern beside the door lost its black housing and is now a pale glass box, and the small house number is drawn differently.
AI-drawn generic stand-in of a two-story house with cool gray horizontal vinyl siding, white window trim, a white front door and a medium brown asphalt shingle roofBefore
The same house with warm tan siding under the same brown roof; white trim, door and roof keptAfter
Example 3 (prompt 3 below; the before is an AI-drawn generic stand-in house, not a real photo): the cool gray siding is now a warm tan, closer to khaki with a hint of yellow than to the gray-brown taupe the prompt asked for. The white window trim, the white front door, the brown roof and the walkway stayed in place. Unrequested changes: the lawn was redrawn, the small number beside the door is drawn differently, the whole house sits about 5 to 8 pixels lower (windows and porch roof), and the roof texture was redrawn. Our first try at this swap, with a shorter prompt, came out a yellower tan, so we reran it with the longer prompt printed below.

What the AI can and cannot do

It can repaint the walls in your photo a new color while usually keeping the roof, the trim, the door and the yard as they are, so you can see the color next to the roof you already have.

It cannot match a paint brand's color or tell you how the color looks at different times of day. The examples above also redrew the lawn, as the captions say. Treat each result as a direction to test with a real paint sample held up against your roof.

House colors people suggest for a brown roof

These suggestions come from two published pieces: Hunker, "10 House Colors That Go With Brown Roofs" by Hedy Phillips (March 31, 2022), and Bob Vila, "6 House and Roof Color Combinations for the Ultimate Curb Appeal" by Theresa Clement (May 7, 2026), which quotes Parada on brown roofs. They are design opinions, not rules.

House colorWhat the guides say with a brown roof
BrownA brown-on-brown look helps the house blend into its surroundings (Hunker).
GreenGreen and brown are both earth tones. Sage with white accents feels soothing, eucalyptus or pistachio is more subdued, and forest green is bolder (Hunker). Bob Vila quotes Parada naming soft sages.
Tan and taupeA tan a couple of shades lighter or darker than the roof lets the two blend, and taupe is a versatile neutral with more character than white or tan (Hunker). Bob Vila quotes Parada naming taupes.
Off-white or creamCream's warm yellow tone matches brown, and stone and copper accents add warmth (Hunker).
WhiteWhite works with any roof color, and a brown roof softens stark white for a warmer look (Hunker).
Navy, blue-black or blue and whiteA cool, saturated blue-black contrasts with a warm brown roof, and white trim adds depth. Navy trim on white stucco looks modern with a brown tile roof (Hunker).
BlackA dark brown roof adds warmth and contrast to a black house, and brown trim and a brown front door reinforce it (Hunker).

Other points from the same sources:

  • Warm over cool. Bob Vila quotes Parada saying brown roofs tend to pair best with warmer, nature-inspired colors, and the same passage steers away from stark or cool tones.
  • Let the roof stay put. A roof is the expensive thing to change, so most people choose the wall color to suit it. If you are still choosing the roof, see the roof shingle colors page.
  • Look at the sample next to the shingles. Shingle browns range from gray-brown to reddish, and the wall color reads against that.

Three house colors to try under a brown roof

  • Sage green on beige. Example 1 repaints a beige house sage green, one of the green suggestions Hunker and Bob Vila make for brown roofs.
  • Navy on white. Example 2 takes a white house to deep navy and keeps the white trim, close to the cool blue against a warm brown roof that Hunker describes.
  • Warm tan instead of cool gray. Example 3 swaps a cool gray for a warm tan, in line with the advice to lean warm under a brown roof. It came out yellower than the taupe we asked for.

How to try a house color on your house

The examples were run directly on an image model, not through this tool, so your results will look different.

  1. Photograph the front in daylight, straight on, from far enough back that the whole house and the roof fit in the frame.
  2. Open the photo enhancer, upload your photo, keep Standard Enhancement and click Generate Enhancement.
  3. Click Edit and paste one of the prompts below into Edit Instructions. Name the one thing to change, its new color, and list what must stay the same.
  4. Check the whole image. Look at everything you asked to keep, and run it again if something moved.

The enhancement and the edit each use credits, so this route uses both free renders. To restyle the whole outside at once, use the exterior designer.

The exact prompts behind the examples

These are the edit prompts used for the three examples, word for word. Change the color and the list of what stays to suit your house.

Prompt 1: siding to sage green

Change only the wall siding color: repaint the beige siding a soft muted sage green. Keep the white window trim, the white front door, the brown roof, the walkway, the lawn, the sky and the camera angle exactly the same.

Prompt 2: siding to deep navy

Change only the wall siding color: repaint the white siding a deep dark navy blue. Keep the white window trim, the front door, the brown roof, the walkway, the lawn, the sky and the camera angle exactly the same.

Prompt 3: siding to warm greige taupe

Change only the wall siding color: repaint the cool gray siding a warm greige taupe, a soft gray-brown like mushroom or putty with no yellow in it. Keep the white window trim, the white front door, the brown roof, the walkway, the lawn, the sky and the camera angle exactly the same.

Before you paint

  • Test a real sample on the wall and look at it in daylight, next to the roof, the trim and the door.
  • Check your HOA or town. Some limit exterior colors.
  • Think about the whole set. Wall, trim, shutters and door are read together with the roof.

Who this is for

Homeowners who like their brown roof but are tired of the wall color, buyers repainting after a purchase, and anyone choosing between a green, a blue and a neutral who wants to see them under their own roof first.

Frequently asked questions

What color house goes with a brown roof?

Bob Vila quotes Parada saying brown roofs tend to pair best with warmer, nature-inspired colors such as creamy neutrals, taupes and soft sages. Hunker (Hedy Phillips, March 31, 2022) lists brown-on-brown, green, tan, taupe, off-white, white, blue-black and even sunset pink. Examples 1 to 3 above try sage green, navy and a warm tan on a brown roof.

Does white go with a brown roof?

Hunker says white works with any roof color, and that a brown roof softens a stark white for a warmer look. Example 2 above starts from a white house and tries navy instead, with the white kept on the trim.

Does gray go with a brown roof?

Bob Vila's source steers brown roofs toward warmer colors and away from stark or cool tones, which is a reason to compare a cool gray with a warm gray or taupe on your photo. Example 3 above swaps a cool gray for a warm tan under the same brown roof. Gray can still work, so look at both before you decide.

What about blue or green with a brown roof?

Hunker says sage green with white accents feels soothing, with forest green bolder, and that a blue-black house contrasts with a warm brown roof, with white trim adding depth. Hunker also pairs navy trim on white stucco with a brown tile roof. Examples 1 and 2 above show a sage green and a navy house.

What color trim goes with a brown roof?

The two guides we read do not give a trim rule for brown roofs, apart from Hunker's note that white trim adds depth to a blue-black house. The examples above keep white trim; the exterior trim colors page on this site tries other trim colors.

Can I preview house colors under my own brown roof?

Yes. Upload a photo of your house, then ask the editor to change only the wall color to a color you name and to keep the roof and everything else the same. The result is a concept of the color, not a paint match, so test a real sample on the wall before you buy paint.

Will the render match the paint color I pick?

No, not exactly. In the examples above the sage came out a little stronger than the prompt said and the warm gray-brown came out a yellower tan. Use the render to choose a direction, then look at a real sample in daylight next to the roof.

Is this tool free?

Signing up is free and gives you 5 credits, which is enough for 2 renders in most countries. Free renders carry an AiExterior watermark. If you want more renders or clean images, paid plans are available on the pricing page.

Do I need an account?

Yes. You need to sign in before a render starts, with an email code or your Google account.
