Exterior House Colors With a Gray Roof: See Them on Your House

Free sign-up with email or Google. You get 2 free renders in most countries; free renders are watermarked.

If your roof is gray and not changing, the wall color has to work with it. Upload a photo of your house below to try off-white, blue, charcoal or another color under your own gray roof, then see what three published guides suggest and three before and after examples.

Roof shingle colors

Before and after examples

Example images are AI-generated: both the sample houses and their redesigns. Results change from render to render, so treat them as concepts, not exact product matches.

AI-drawn generic stand-in of a two-story house with yellow-tan horizontal siding, white window trim, a dark gray front door under a small porch and a medium gray shingle roofBefore
The same house with creamy white siding; gray roof, white trim and dark gray door keptAfter
Example 1 (prompt 1 below; the before is an AI-drawn generic stand-in house, not a real photo): the yellow-tan siding is now white, a little brighter than the warm creamy white we asked for. The medium gray roof, the white window trim, the dark gray front door and the walkway stayed in place. The white trim is now harder to see against the white walls. Unrequested change: the grass was redrawn.
AI-drawn generic stand-in of a two-story house with white horizontal siding, white window trim, a black front door under a small porch and a medium gray shingle roofBefore
The same house with blue siding; gray roof, white trim and black door keptAfter
Example 2 (prompt 2 below; the before is an AI-drawn generic stand-in house, not a real photo): the white siding is now a medium blue, stronger and less dusty than the soft dusty blue we asked for. The medium gray roof, the white window trim, the black front door and the walkway stayed in place. Unrequested change: the grass was redrawn.
AI-drawn generic stand-in of a one-story house with beige horizontal siding, white window trim, a white front door, a white garage door and a medium gray shingle roofBefore
The same house with dark charcoal siding; gray roof, white trim, door and garage door keptAfter
Example 3 (prompt 3 below; the before is an AI-drawn generic stand-in house, not a real photo): the beige siding is now a dark charcoal on the walls, the garage wall and the front gable, darker than the roof, so it reads as a contrast rather than tone on tone. The medium gray roof, the white window trim, the white front door and the white garage door stayed in place. Unrequested change: the grass was redrawn.

What the AI can and cannot do

It can repaint the walls of the house in your photo and leave the gray roof as it is, so you can see a wall color under the roof you already have.

It cannot match a paint brand's color or show how it reads against your particular roof in all light. As the captions say, the result can come out brighter, bluer or darker than the words in the prompt, and the grass is redrawn. Treat each result as a direction to test with a real paint sample held up next to the roof.

House colors people suggest for a gray roof

These suggestions come from three published pieces: Hunker, "9 Exterior House Colors That Go Well With A Gray Roof" by Erika Dale (April 21, 2025); Bob Vila, "6 House and Roof Color Combinations for the Ultimate Curb Appeal" by Theresa Clement (May 7, 2026); and an LP blog post, "Fresh Color Palettes for a Gray or Black Roof" (no author or date shown). They are design opinions, not rules. We left out the paint product names and kept the color and placement ideas.

Wall colorWhat the sources say
Creamy off-whiteHunker says it works with light to dark gray roofs, including shingle, metal and tile, and advises a warm, creamy shade rather than a stark or cool white.
Soft light blueHunker says it suits light to medium gray shingle roofs and gives a coastal or historic feel, since the blue's cool tones echo the roof's. Bob Vila says gray roofs pair especially well with a rich blue or a light gray house.
Deep muted navyHunker says it contrasts strongly with a light to medium gray roof and suits dramatic, upscale homes, and advises a dark, muted navy rather than a royal or oversaturated blue.
Sage greenHunker says it works with all gray roof shades from light to dark. It advises desaturated gray-greens for a neutral look, or a slightly more saturated sage for more color.
Forest greenHunker says it contrasts well with a light to medium gray roof and advises medium-dark to deep greens rather than bright ones.
Charcoal, tone on toneHunker says a charcoal body matches a medium-dark to dark gray roof for a moody, contemporary look, softened by warm natural wood, black details and green landscaping.
Light gray or greigeHunker says a light gray or greige body with a matching roof gives a soft, coastal New England look on homes with a coastal character.
Softer tonesHunker also lists a soft butter yellow and a muted peachy-pink, the pink with off-white trim, for cheerful, cottage-style looks with a light or light-to-medium gray roof.

Other points from the sources:

  • Check the roof undertone. The LP post says gray roofs can carry blue, green, violet or slightly brown undertones, and that black and dark gray roofs are the most neutral and suit the widest range of palettes. Bob Vila quotes a paint company representative who says exterior paint should suit the roof's undertone rather than fight it.
  • Repeat the undertone. The LP post suggests repeating the roof's undertone elsewhere on the house, such as shutters in a similar or deeper green on a green-tinged roof.
  • Trim. The LP post suggests off-white, dark gray or black trim rather than beige.
  • Brick and stone. The LP post says most brick colors, including reds, oranges and yellows, pair well with gray or black roofs.
  • Climate and resale. Bob Vila quotes one investor who says darker gray roofs suit cloudy, cool climates, and a real estate agent who suggests lighter gray in warm climates since lighter colors reflect more sunlight. The agent also says light or dark gray works with nearly any house paint if resale is the goal.

The roof stays, the walls change

On this page the gray roof is a given and you choose the wall color. If you are still choosing the roof itself, see roof shingle colors or metal roof colors. If your roof is brown instead, see house colors for a brown roof. If you want to go gray on the walls as well, see gray house exterior ideas.

Three wall colors to try under a gray roof

The examples were run directly on an image model, not through the tool above, so your results will look different. In every example the prompt tells the AI to keep the gray roof exactly as it is.

  • Creamy white. Example 1 turns yellow-tan siding white, the off-white Hunker says suits light to dark gray roofs.
  • Dusty blue. Example 2 puts a blue on white siding, in line with the blue that Hunker and Bob Vila suggest. It came out stronger than we asked.
  • Dark charcoal. Example 3 goes dark charcoal, darker than the roof, so it is a contrast rather than the tone on tone look Hunker describes.

How to try it on your house

  1. Photograph the front in daylight, straight on, from far enough back that the whole house and the roof fit in the frame.
  2. Upload it in the tool at the top of this page, or open the exterior designer, and name the wall color you want.
  3. Tell it to keep the roof exactly as it is, and list the trim, door or garage door to keep, as the prompts below do.
  4. Check the whole image. Look at the roof, the trim and the grass, and run it again if something changed that you did not ask for.

The exact prompts behind the examples

These are the edit prompts used for the three examples, word for word. Change the colors and the list of what stays to suit your house.

Prompt 1: yellow-tan siding to creamy white

Change ONLY the wall siding color: repaint the yellow-tan siding on every wall a warm creamy white. Keep the medium gray roof exactly as it is, plus the white window trim, the dark gray front door, the lawn, the walkway, the sky and the camera angle exactly the same.

Prompt 2: white siding to dusty blue

Change ONLY the wall siding color: repaint the white siding on every wall a soft dusty blue. Keep the medium gray roof exactly as it is, plus the white window trim, the black front door, the lawn, the walkway, the sky and the camera angle exactly the same.

Prompt 3: beige siding to dark charcoal

Change ONLY the wall siding color: repaint the beige siding on every wall, including the garage wall, a dark charcoal gray, darker than the roof. Keep the medium gray roof exactly as it is, plus the white window trim, the white front door, the white garage door, the lawn, the driveway, the sky and the camera angle exactly the same.

Frequently asked questions

What color house goes with a gray roof?

Hunker lists a creamy off-white, a soft light blue, a deep muted navy, sage and forest green, charcoal and a light gray or greige, among others. Bob Vila says gray roofs pair especially well with a rich blue or a light gray house. Examples 1 to 3 above try a creamy white, a blue and a charcoal under the same kind of roof.

What trim color goes with a gray roof?

The LP post suggests off-white, dark gray or black trim rather than beige. All three examples above keep a white trim.

Does white work with a gray roof?

Hunker says a creamy off-white works with light to dark gray roofs, and advises a warm shade rather than a stark or cool white. Example 1 above tries a creamy white, and it came out a little brighter than asked.

Can I have a charcoal house with a gray roof?

Hunker says a charcoal body matches a medium-dark to dark gray roof for a moody look. Example 3 above puts a dark charcoal under a medium gray roof, so it is a contrast rather than a match.

How do I check a color against my roof undertone?

The LP post says gray roofs can lean blue, green, violet or slightly brown, and Bob Vila quotes a paint company representative who says the paint should suit the roof's undertone. Hold large samples next to the roof in daylight.

Can I try colors on my own photo with the roof kept?

Yes. Upload a photo of the front of your house in the tool at the top of this page, name the wall color and tell the AI to keep the roof exactly as it is, like the prompts below. In our three examples the roof stayed the same, but the grass was redrawn each time.

Will the colors come out exactly as I ask?

Not exactly. Our dusty blue came out a stronger blue and our creamy white came out a little brighter than asked. Use the render to compare directions, then test real paint samples next to your roof, in the light at different times of day.
