Metal Roof Colors: See Them on Your House Before You Order

A roof is hard to change once it is on, so the color is a decision you live with. Before you order, you can see black, bronze, copper or another color on a photo of your own house with AI. This page shows three examples on stand-in houses, lists what two published guides suggest for different roof colors, and tells you what a render cannot show.

Free sign-up with email or Google. You get 2 free renders in most countries; free renders are watermarked.

Before and after examples

Example images are AI-generated: both the sample houses and their redesigns. Results change from render to render, so treat them as concepts, not exact product matches.

AI-drawn generic stand-in of a one-story white ranch house with an attached garage, a black front door, a black-framed window and a gray asphalt shingle roofBefore
The same house with a matte black standing seam metal roof; walls, door, window and garage door keptAfter
Example 1 (prompt 1 below; the before is an AI-drawn generic stand-in house, not a real photo): the gray shingles on the main roof and the entry gable are now a matte black metal roof with long vertical seams, and the tree shadow still falls across the right side of the roof. The white walls, the black front door, the black window frame, the white garage door and the driveway stayed in place. Unrequested changes: the white gutter line along the eave is now black, the sloped edges of the entry gable gained a thin black edge, and the lawn was redrawn.
AI-drawn generic stand-in of a two-story red brick house with dark maroon-brown shutters, white window trim, a white front door under a small entry roof and a dark gray asphalt shingle roofBefore
The same house with a dark brown standing seam metal roof over the main house and the entry roof; brick, shutters, trim and door keptAfter
Example 2 (prompt 2 below; the before is an AI-drawn generic stand-in house, not a real photo): the dark gray shingles on the main roof and the small entry roof are now a dark brown metal roof with vertical seams, a chocolate brown with a slight bronze cast. The red brick, the dark maroon-brown shutters, the white window trim, the white front door and the walkway stayed in place. Unrequested changes: the white eave gutter and fascia under the main roof became dark brown, the roof overhang is deeper and the upper windows and walls sit a few pixels lower than in the before, the lawn was redrawn, the shrubs along the wall are drawn a little differently, the small house number by the door is drawn differently, and the pattern of darker bricks is not identical to the before.
AI-drawn generic stand-in of a two-story sage green vinyl-sided house with white trim, a white front door and a weathered, stained gray asphalt shingle roof over the main house and the porchBefore
The same house with a bright copper-orange standing seam metal roof; siding, trim and door keptAfter
Example 3 (prompt 3 below; the before is an AI-drawn generic stand-in house, not a real photo): the stained gray shingles on the main roof and the roof over the porch are now a bright copper-orange metal roof with vertical seams, more orange and more shiny than aged copper, and the lighter blotches on the lower roof are left over from the stains in the before picture. The sage green siding, the white trim, the white front door and the walkway stayed in place. Unrequested changes: the lawn was redrawn and the small mark by the door is drawn a little differently.

What the AI can and cannot do

It can redraw the roof in your photo as a metal roof in a new color, with seams, while usually keeping the walls, the trim, the door and the yard as they are, so you can see the color on your own house.

It cannot match a manufacturer's color, show real panel profiles or finishes, check your roof pitch or structure, or tell you how the color weathers. The examples above also redrew the lawn and some edge details, as the captions say. Treat each result as a direction to check with real color samples.

Metal roof colors people suggest, by roof color

These pairings come from two published pieces: Hunker, "12 Attractive Exterior House Colors That Go With A Metal Roof" by Erika Dale (February 22, 2025), and Bob Vila, "6 House and Roof Color Combinations for the Ultimate Curb Appeal" by Theresa Clement (May 7, 2026), which quotes several named people and the Metal Roofing Alliance. They are design opinions, not rules.

Metal roof colorHouse colors the guides mention
BlackWhite, dark navy, black, light gray, dark green, charcoal and olive sage (Hunker). Bob Vila quotes Dainard calling black the most universal roof color.
BronzeWhite, light gray, dark green, dark bronze and brown-taupe (Hunker).
CopperWhite, dark navy and sage green (Hunker).
TaupeWhite, and a light taupe that matches or runs slightly darker (Hunker).
GrayBlues, including light blue with white trim (Hunker). Bob Vila pairs a gray roof with rich blue or light gray, and quotes Aboulafia saying light gray and dark gray are the most versatile.
ZincWarm grays, off-whites and earthy greens, according to Parada, as quoted by Bob Vila.

Other points from the same sources:

  • Paint and weathering. Bob Vila quotes the Metal Roofing Alliance saying painting adds a protective layer that guards against rust and UV damage, and that unpainted zinc and copper change over time.
  • Keep the undertones in mind. Bob Vila quotes Dainard on warm gray metal windows matched with a warm gray roof making a house feel intentional.
  • Look at the whole picture. Both guides pair the roof with the house color and trim, so preview the roof next to your siding or brick instead of on its own.

Three metal roof colors to try

  • Matte black on white. Example 1 puts a black standing seam roof on a white ranch with a black door and window frame, the white-and-black pairing Hunker lists for black roofs.
  • Dark bronze-brown on red brick. Example 2 puts a dark brown metal roof on red brick. This is our own try, since the guides above do not cover brick.
  • Copper on sage green. Example 3 puts a copper-colored roof on a sage green house, a pairing from Hunker's copper list. Real copper changes color over time, so this bright orange is only a starting look.

How to try a metal roof color on your house

The examples were run directly on an image model, not through this tool, so your results will look different.

  1. Photograph the front in daylight, straight on, from far enough back that the whole roof, including any small entry or porch roofs, fits in the frame.
  2. Open the photo enhancer, upload your photo, keep Standard Enhancement and click Generate Enhancement.
  3. Click Edit and paste one of the prompts below into Edit Instructions. Name the one thing to change, its new color, and list what must stay the same.
  4. Check the whole image. Look at everything you asked to keep, and run it again if something moved.

The enhancement and the edit each use credits, so this route uses both free renders. To restyle the whole outside at once, use the exterior designer.

The exact prompts behind the examples

These are the edit prompts used for the three examples, word for word. Change the color and the list of what stays to suit your house.

Prompt 1: roof to matte black metal

Change only the roof: replace the gray asphalt shingles on the whole roof with a matte black standing seam metal roof with thin vertical seams. Keep the white walls, the black front door, the black window frames, the garage door, the driveway, the lawn, the sky and the camera angle exactly the same.

Prompt 2: roof to dark bronze metal

Change only the roof: replace the dark gray asphalt shingles on the whole roof with a very dark bronze standing seam metal roof, almost black with a brown tint, with thin vertical seams. Keep the red brick walls, the white window trim, the white front door, the walkway, the lawn, the sky and the camera angle exactly the same.

Prompt 3: roof to copper metal

Change only the roof: replace the gray asphalt shingles on the whole roof with a copper colored standing seam metal roof with thin vertical seams. Keep the sage green siding, the white window trim, the white front door, the walkway, the lawn, the sky and the camera angle exactly the same.

Before you order

  • Look at real samples from the roof maker in daylight, next to your siding and trim.
  • Ask roofers about your roof. Pitch, structure, underlayment and local rules decide what can go on your house, and a picture does not check any of them.
  • Check your HOA or town. Some limit roof materials and colors.

Who this is for

Homeowners comparing metal roof colors before asking for quotes, sellers who want to see a direction before they commit, and roofers or sales reps who want to show a client how a color might look on their own house.

Frequently asked questions

What color metal roof goes with a white house?

Hunker lists white as a house color for black, bronze, taupe and copper metal roofs, and Bob Vila quotes Dainard saying that if you want flexibility, go black. Example 1 above puts a matte black metal roof on a white ranch. Pick by looking at your own photo, because the same roof reads differently on a different house.

What color metal roof goes with a red brick house?

Neither guide gives a metal roof pairing for red brick, so we can only show our own try: Example 2 puts a dark bronze-brown metal roof on a red brick house. Hunker's bronze list suggests white, light gray and dark green house colors instead, and its black list adds charcoal and dark navy. Preview a few roof colors against your own brick.

What color house goes with a copper metal roof?

Hunker lists white, dark navy and sage green for a copper roof. Example 3 above puts a copper-colored roof on a sage green house, one of those pairings. Bob Vila quotes the Metal Roofing Alliance saying that unpainted options such as zinc and copper can give a unique look over time, so a new bright copper will not stay that color.

What color house goes with a gray metal roof?

Bob Vila quotes Aboulafia saying light gray and dark gray are the most versatile roof colors, and pairs a gray roof with a rich blue or light gray house. Hunker suggests blue house colors for gray metal roofs, including light blue with white trim.

Is a painted metal roof different from an unpainted one?

Bob Vila quotes the Metal Roofing Alliance saying that painting adds a protective layer to a metal roof that guards against rust and UV damage, and that paint can reflect sunlight. It also says unpainted zinc and copper change over time, for example zinc shifting from dark gray toward blue-gray. The renders on this page only show a color, not a coating.

Can the AI show a standing seam metal roof on my house?

Yes. Upload a photo of your house, then ask the editor to change only the roof to a standing seam metal roof in the color you name and to keep everything else the same. The result is a picture of the look. It does not check your roof pitch, structure or local rules.

Will the render match the metal roof color I pick?

No, not exactly. In the examples above the black came out close to what we asked for, the bronze came out a chocolate brown and the copper came out a bright orange. Use the render to choose a direction, then look at the maker's real color samples in daylight.

Is this tool free?
