Before and after examples

Example images are AI-generated: both the sample houses and their redesigns. Results change from render to render, so treat them as concepts, not exact product matches.

AI-drawn generic stand-in of a two-story house with yellow-tan horizontal siding, white window trim, a dark gray front door under a small porch roof and a black shingle roofBefore
The same house with bright white siding under the same black roof; window trim, door and roof keptAfter
Example 1 (prompt 1 below; the before is an AI-drawn generic stand-in house, not a real photo): the yellow-tan siding is now a bright white on every wall. The black roof, the dark gray front door and the walkway stayed in place. Side effects: the white window trim now sits against white walls, so it blends in and the windows read as plain dark panes, and the lawn was redrawn. Run once.
AI-drawn generic stand-in of a one-story ranch house with light gray siding, white window trim, a dark front door, a white garage door and a very dark charcoal-black shingle roofBefore
The same house with deep forest green siding under the same dark roof; white trim, white garage door and roof keptAfter
Example 2 (prompt 2 below; the before is an AI-drawn generic stand-in house, not a real photo): the light gray siding is now a deep green on the walls and the front gable. It is a stronger, more saturated green than a muted forest green. The roof stayed the same very dark charcoal, which reads as black, and the white trim and white garage door stayed in place. Unrequested change: the lawn was redrawn. Run once.
AI-drawn generic stand-in of a two-story farmhouse with white siding, black window frames, a porch with white posts, a wooden front door and a black roofBefore
The same farmhouse with tan-brown siding under the same black roof; black window frames, white porch posts and wooden door keptAfter
Example 3 (prompt 3 below; the before is an AI-drawn generic stand-in house, not a real photo): the white siding is now a tan-brown on every wall, warmer and browner than the "soft gray-brown" taupe we asked for. The black roof, the black window frames, the white porch posts and the wooden door stayed in place. Side effects: the porch back wall was repainted with the walls, and the gravel and lawn were redrawn. Run once.

What the AI can and cannot do

It can repaint the walls of the house in your photo and leave the roof as it is, so you can see a wall color next to the black roof you already have.

It cannot match a paint brand's color, tell you how the color looks at different times of day, or say anything about heat. As the captions say, trim can blend into the new wall color and the lawn gets redrawn. Treat each result as a direction to test with a real paint sample held up against the roof.

House colors people suggest for a black roof

These suggestions come from two published pieces: Hunker, "12 Exterior House Colors That Go With A Black Roof" by Taylor Gorski (October 1, 2022), and Bob Vila, a guide to house and roof color combinations by Theresa Clement (May 7, 2026). They are design opinions, not rules. The Hunker piece names paint products for each color; we left those out and kept the color and trim ideas.

House colorWhat Hunker says with a black roof
WhiteA classic black-and-white look. Wood on the front door, portico or patio cover adds warmth.
Dark greenA moodier option. Black window trim and white siding with a wood porch cover add interest.
BeigeA light beige with stone looks modern yet rustic. Painting the window trim and garage door a very dark color ties it together.
Dark brownA farmhouse style that works despite seeming risky. White trim adds contrast and brickwork adds texture.
BlackAn all-black, monochrome exterior. Brass light fixtures and a contrasting door color add flair.
Charcoal grayA softer alternative to all-black, with subtle contrast from a black door and roof. Brick, wood and copper add warmth.
Light woodPairing black siding with light wood lightens the look and adds depth through two tones.
Light grayA pale gray that still stands out against a black roof. Dark wood details help. Watch the gray's undertones through the day.
Navy blueThe black roof makes a subtle transition from navy siding. An orange-toned wooden door and green landscaping add warmth.
Red brickClassic and timeless. White trim stands out against the brick and black shutters echo the roof.
CreamA warmer take on black-and-white. Black downspouts and lighting add a modern edge.
TaupeAn earthy, sand-toned option that lets landscaping and brick stand out.

Other points from the two sources:

  • Black suits many choices. Bob Vila quotes designer James Dainard calling black the most universal roof color, and paint expert Lisbeth Parada saying it can support higher-contrast schemes such as a warm white body with deep navy accents.
  • Look past the siding. Hunker says to consider the garage door, window trim, downspouts, gutters and landscaping, not only the siding.
  • Start with fixed features. Bob Vila suggests starting from brick or stone, the architectural style and the neighborhood, and matching the roof to the windows, siding and trim so the exterior feels cohesive.
  • Check rules and sample first. Bob Vila suggests checking HOA rules and local comparable sales. Hunker suggests painting sample patches on the exterior wall and checking them at different times of day.

What the sources say about heat

Hunker says a black roof absorbs heat, which can help melt snow in colder climates but can make the rooms below warmer and can make the roofing material fade and break down faster; good roof ventilation can help. Bob Vila quotes Dainard saying darker roofs suit cold climates better than hot ones. We cannot test any of this with a photo edit, and neither source gives numbers, so for your own roof ask a local roofer. If you are still choosing the roof, see roof shingle colors and metal roof colors.

Three house colors to try under a black roof

The examples were run directly on an image model, not through the tool above, so your results will look different. In every example the prompt tells the AI to keep the roof exactly as it is.

  • White on yellow-tan. Example 1 takes a yellow-tan house to bright white, the classic black-and-white look both guides describe. White trim on white walls blends in.
  • Dark green on light gray. Example 2 takes a gray house to a deep green, the moodier option in Hunker's list. It came out more saturated than a muted forest green.
  • Taupe on white. Example 3 takes a white farmhouse to a taupe and keeps the black window frames. It came out browner than the gray-brown we asked for.

How to try a house color on your house

  1. Photograph the front in daylight, straight on, from far enough back that the whole house and the roof fit in the frame.
  2. Upload it in the tool at the top of this page, or open the exterior designer, and name the new wall color.
  3. Tell it to keep the roof exactly as it is, and list the trim, door and garage door to keep, as the prompts below do.
  4. Check the whole image. Look at the roof, the trim and the lawn, and run it again if something changed that you did not ask for.

The exact prompts behind the examples

These are the edit prompts used for the three examples, word for word. Change the colors and the list of what stays to suit your house.

Prompt 1: siding to bright white

Change only the wall siding color: repaint the yellow-tan siding on every wall a crisp bright white. Keep the black roof exactly as it is, plus the white window trim, the dark gray front door, the walkway, the lawn, the sky and the camera angle exactly the same.

Prompt 2: siding to deep forest green

Change only the wall siding color: repaint the light gray siding on every wall a deep forest green. Keep the black roof exactly as it is, plus the white window trim, the dark front door, the white garage door, the driveway, the lawn, the sky and the camera angle exactly the same.

Prompt 3: siding to warm sandy taupe

Change only the wall siding color: repaint the white siding on every wall a warm sandy taupe, a soft gray-brown. Keep the black roof exactly as it is, plus the black window frames, the white porch posts, the wooden front door, the path, the lawn, the sky and the camera angle exactly the same.

Frequently asked questions

What color house goes with a black roof?

Hunker lists twelve: white, dark green, beige, dark brown, black, charcoal gray, light wood, light gray, navy blue, red brick, cream and taupe. Bob Vila quotes a designer calling black the most universal roof color and a paint expert suggesting a warm white body with deep navy accents. The table above sets them out with the source for each.

Does a white house with a black roof look good?

Both guides present it as a classic. Hunker calls it a classic black-and-white look and suggests adding wood on the door or porch for warmth. Bob Vila calls a white house with a black roof classic and elegant. In our first example, the white trim blended into white walls, so check how your trim reads.

What trim color goes with a black roof?

The sources vary by house. Hunker's examples include black window trim on a dark green house, white trim on a dark brown house, white trim and black shutters on red brick, and a very dark window trim and garage door on a beige house. Test the trim next to the siding, since white trim on a white wall can disappear.

Does a black roof make the house hotter?

The two sources say a darker roof absorbs more heat. Hunker says the heat can make rooms below warmer and can wear the roofing material faster, and that good roof ventilation helps. Bob Vila says dark roofs suit cold climates better than hot ones, and a lighter roof reflects heat in a hot area like Arizona. A color preview cannot tell you about the heat in your own house; ask a roofer.

Can I try a house color on my own photo with the roof kept black?

Yes. Upload a photo of the front of your house in the tool at the top of this page, name the wall color you want and tell the AI to keep the roof exactly as it is, like the prompts below. In our three examples the roof stayed black. Check the whole image anyway, since the lawn and some trim also changed.

Will the colors come out exactly as I ask?

Not exactly. Our deep forest green came out stronger and more saturated, and the soft gray-brown taupe came out tan-brown. Use the render to compare directions, then test real paint samples on your wall, in the light at different times of day.
