Modern Farmhouse Exterior: Upload Your House and See the Look

White or off-white walls, black accents, a pitched roof and a welcoming porch: the modern farmhouse look is easy to describe and hard to judge from a drawing. Upload a photo of your house below to see it on your own home, then read what published design sources say about each part.

Before and after examples

Example images are AI-generated: both the sample houses and their redesigns. Results change from render to render, so treat them as concepts, not exact product matches.

AI-drawn generic stand-in of a two-story suburban house with beige horizontal vinyl siding, brown shutters, a brown front door under a small porch, a brown garage door, a gray shingle roof and a green lawnBefore
The same house with white vertical board-and-batten siding, black shutters and a black front door; the brown garage door, the tan porch posts, the roof and the lawn keptAfter
Example 1 (prompt 1 below; the before is an AI-drawn generic stand-in house, not a real photo): the siding is now white and vertical with narrow battens, and the front door is black. What it did not follow: the prompt asked for black window frames, but the frames stayed white and the model turned the brown shutters black instead. The garage door stayed brown and the porch posts stayed tan, so the black accent is only partial.
AI-drawn generic stand-in of a two-story white house with black shutters, a covered front porch with white posts and railing, a gray asphalt shingle roof and a green lawnBefore
The same house with a black metal roof with raised seams on both the main roof and the porch roof; the white siding, black shutters, porch and lawn keptAfter
Example 2 (prompt 2 below; the before is an AI-drawn generic stand-in house, not a real photo): the gray shingle roof, both the main roof and the porch roof, is now a black roof with raised seams. The white siding, the black shutters, the porch and the lawn look the same. The sheen is the model's drawing of metal; check the finish of a real panel before you order.
AI-drawn generic stand-in of a two-story white house with black window frames, a white front door under a small porch with wooden posts, a white garage door, a dark roof and a green lawnBefore
The same house with a warm wood-colored front door and garage door; the white siding, black window frames, porch posts, roof and lawn keptAfter
Example 3 (prompt 3 below; the before is an AI-drawn generic stand-in house, not a real photo): the front door and the garage door now have a warm wood look. The color is a stronger orange than most real stains, and the garage door is drawn as paneled wood. The rest of the house looks the same.

What the AI can and cannot do

It can change the siding style and color, the roof, the doors and the trim in your photo while usually keeping the shape of the house, so you can judge a look before you buy anything.

It cannot match a real product, know your local rules, or follow every instruction exactly. In our examples it turned shutters black when we asked for window frames, and drew a very orange wood door. Check the whole image and name every part you want changed.

What makes an exterior modern farmhouse

The points below come from five published sources: Brick & Batten, "Modern Farmhouse Exterior" (by Sarah, August 2021; the site sells design services); Domino, "Modern Farmhouse Exterior" (by Lydia Geisel, June 2023; the page may earn revenue from products it features); Hunker, "Farmhouse Exterior Ideas" (by Siobhan Murphy, updated December 2022; it has affiliate links); Dwell, "Modern Farmhouses" (by Christin Perry, 2018, updated 2019; it links to shops); and Toll Brothers, "Modern Farmhouse Exterior Styles" (updated October 2026; a homebuilder promoting its own homes). Several of them sell something, so treat them as design opinions, not rules.

ElementWhat the sources say
ColorsWhite or off-white with black trim, windows and doors (Brick & Batten, Domino, Hunker, Toll Brothers). Newer examples add sage, green or charcoal (Domino, Toll Brothers).
SidingBoard-and-batten paired with brick, stone or stucco (Brick & Batten, Toll Brothers, Hunker). Direction differs: vertical is a hallmark for Brick & Batten, horizontal is typical for Domino and Hunker, and Dwell's example uses lap siding.
RoofPitched or gable rooflines (Domino, Hunker, Toll Brothers), with metal roofing in several examples (Dwell, Domino, Toll Brothers, Hunker).
WindowsLarge windows with black or dark frames (Domino, Hunker, Toll Brothers); round windows in one Domino example.
Porch and doorsA front porch with wood columns (Brick & Batten, Hunker); a wooden or Dutch door (Hunker, Domino); a black door in some examples.
LightingBarn-style or warehouse-style sconces and lanterns, often black (Hunker, Brick & Batten).

What to avoid

Brick & Batten lists a few things that work against the style: more than one sign on the front porch, Spanish Mediterranean styling or an orange clay tile roof, and Victorian-style embellishments. That is one design company's opinion; you can still render any of them on your photo and decide for yourself.

Three modern farmhouse changes to try

  • White board-and-batten with black accents. Example 1 turns beige horizontal siding into white vertical board-and-batten and makes the front door black. Only the shutters, not the window frames, turned black.
  • Black standing-seam metal roof. Example 2 swaps a gray shingle roof for black metal over the house and the porch.
  • Wood doors. Example 3 gives the front door and the garage door a warm wood look. It is more orange than a real stain, so pick a real sample.

How to try modern farmhouse on your house

The examples were run directly on an image model, not through the tool above, so your results will look different.

  1. Photograph the front in daylight, straight on, from far enough back that the whole house fits in the frame.
  2. Upload it in the tool at the top of this page, or open the exterior designer, choose a style and click generate.
  3. Name the parts to change and list what must stay the same, like the prompts below.
  4. Check the whole image. Look at every window, the doors and the roof, and run it again if something moved.

The exact prompts behind the examples

These are the edit prompts used for the three examples, word for word. Change the parts and the list of what stays to suit your house.

Prompt 1: white board-and-batten siding, black frames and door

Change ONLY the siding and trim: make the siding white vertical board-and-batten, the window frames black and the front door black. Keep the roof, the porch, the garage door, the driveway, the lawn and the camera angle exactly the same.

Prompt 2: black standing-seam metal roof

Change ONLY the roof: replace it with a black standing-seam metal roof. Keep the white siding, the black window frames, the porch, the lawn and the camera angle exactly the same.

Prompt 3: stained wood front and garage doors

Change ONLY the front door and the garage door: give both a warm stained wood finish. Keep the white siding, the black window frames, the porch, the roof, the lawn and the camera angle exactly the same.

Before you build or paint

  • Test real samples. Look at siding, paint and door finishes on your own house in your own light.
  • Decide how much black. The style leans on black accents; Brick & Batten and Hunker both treat them as a defining touch, so see how much suits your house first.
  • Check your HOA or town for exterior color and material rules.

Who this is for

Homeowners and buyers planning a refresh or a build who want to see a modern farmhouse look on their own house before they pay for paint, siding or a roof.

Frequently asked questions

What colors work for a modern farmhouse exterior?

Brick & Batten says these homes are usually white or off-white, often with high-contrast black trim. Domino says newer exteriors are moving toward cool green and charcoal instead of neutrals.

Should modern farmhouse siding be horizontal or vertical?

The sources disagree. Brick & Batten calls vertical siding a hallmark of the style, while Domino says searches for the style mostly show horizontal siding, and Hunker lists horizontal siding for farmhouse exteriors. Preview both on your own house.

What roof suits a modern farmhouse?

Hunker calls pointed gable roofs a hallmark of the traditional style, and Domino and Toll Brothers also show pitched or gable rooflines. Dwell's North Carolina example uses a standing-seam metal roof, and Toll Brothers mentions metal roofing on some of its examples.

What exterior lighting fits a modern farmhouse?

Hunker suggests barn-style lights, often in black, at the entry, and Brick & Batten points to barn or warehouse-style sconces and lanterns.

What front door fits a modern farmhouse?

Brick & Batten shows a wooden door with windows or glass. Hunker recommends a Dutch door, and Domino's lakeside example has a green Dutch door. A black door appears in Hunker's and Toll Brothers' examples.

Can I preview a modern farmhouse look on my own house?

Yes. Upload a photo of your house in the tool at the top of this page, then list the parts to change and what must stay the same. Check what else moved: in our examples a model changed shutters instead of window frames and drew an orange wood door.

Will the render match a real paint color or material?

No, not exactly. Use the render to choose a direction, then test real samples on your own house before you buy paint or materials.

Is this tool free?

Signing up is free and gives you 5 credits, which is enough for 2 renders in most countries. Free renders carry an AiExterior watermark. If you want more renders or clean images, paid plans are available on the pricing page.

Do I need an account?

Yes. You need to sign in before a render starts, with an email code or your Google account.
