Red House Exterior Ideas: See Barn Red or Deep Red on Your House

Painting a house red is a big step, so most people want to see it first: which red, and what trim, door and roof go with it. Upload a photo of your house below to try a red on it, then see what the photo galleries show and two before and after examples.

Before and after examples

Example images are AI-generated: both the sample houses and their redesigns. Results change from render to render, so treat them as concepts, not exact product matches.

AI-drawn generic stand-in of a two-story farmhouse with white lap siding, white trim, a covered front porch with white posts and railings, a black front door and a dark gray metal roofBefore
The same farmhouse with deep barn red siding on both floors; white trim, white porch, black door and metal roof keptAfter
Example 1 (prompt 1 below; the before is an AI-drawn generic stand-in house, not a real photo): the white siding on both floors is now a deep barn red. The white trim, the white porch posts and railings, the black front door, the metal roof, the windows and the shrubs stayed in place. We saw no unrequested changes.
AI-drawn generic stand-in of a one-story bungalow with beige siding, white trim, a small front porch with white columns, a white front door and a brown shingle roofBefore
The same bungalow with deep cranberry red siding and pale yellow trim; white door and white porch columns keptAfter
Example 2 (prompt 2 below; the before is an AI-drawn generic stand-in house, not a real photo): the beige siding, the front gable included, is now a deep cranberry red. Partly followed: we asked for cream trim and the model made it a pale butter yellow. The white front door, the white porch columns, the roof and the windows stayed in place.

What the AI can and cannot do

It can repaint the siding of your house a barn red or a deeper red, and keep the trim, the door and the roof as they are, so you can compare reds on your own house.

It cannot match a paint chip exactly. Reds also look darker in shade than in sun, and the model may tint the trim when you ask for a new trim color, as Example 2 shows. Treat each result as a direction, then test real samples.

What the photo galleries show for a red house

These points come from the red exterior photo galleries on Houzz (UK and Australia). They are project photos with short captions, not paint guides, so the table below is our own summary of what the photos show again and again. They are design opinions, not rules.

Part of the schemeSummary
ShadeBarn red on farmhouse and barn-style houses, and deep brick red on traditional houses.
TrimBright white trim is the most common partner, for example red lap siding with white trim.
RoofDark gray or black roofs show up often and keep a red house from looking too bright.
GuttersBlack gutters and downspouts appear with red siding and white trim.
StyleRed appears on modern and industrial houses too, not only on farmhouses.

Where this page sits among the color pages

This page is about painting the siding red. If your house is red brick and you want colors that go with it, see red brick house exterior colors. For a red roof, see house colors with a red roof, and for barn red on a farmhouse, see farmhouse exterior colors.

Two red house ideas to try

The examples were run directly on an image model, not through the tool above, so your results will look different.

  • Barn red with white trim. Example 1 turns a white farmhouse barn red and keeps the white trim, the white porch and the black door.
  • Deep red with cream trim. Example 2 turns a beige bungalow a deep cranberry red and asks for cream trim.

How to try it on your house

  1. Photograph the front in daylight, straight on, from far enough back that the whole house, the roof and the trim fit in the frame.
  2. Upload it in the tool at the top of this page, or open the exterior designer, and name the colors you want and the parts they go on.
  3. Say what stays. List the parts you are keeping, such as the trim, the roof and the windows, as the prompts below do.
  4. Check the whole image. Look at the trim, the door and the roof edges, since the model sometimes repaints a part you did not name, and run it again if something is off.

The exact prompts behind the examples

These are the edit prompts used for the two examples, word for word. Change the colors and the list of what stays to suit your house.

Prompt 1: white farmhouse to barn red

Repaint ONLY the siding a deep barn red. Keep the white trim, the white porch posts and the black front door. Keep everything else unchanged: the roof, every window position, the shrubs, the lawn, the sky and the camera angle.

Prompt 2: beige bungalow to deep red with cream trim

Repaint the siding a deep cranberry red and the trim a warm cream. Keep the front door white. Keep everything else unchanged: the roof, every window position, the shrubs, the lawn, the sky and the camera angle.

Before you paint

  • Test two or three reds side by side. Reds range from orange-red to blue-red, and the difference is easy to miss on a small chip.
  • Look at the roof. A dark gray or black roof is the common partner in the photos; check yours against the red you pick.
  • Ask about fading. Strong reds can fade in full sun, so ask your paint store which exterior lines hold color best.

Who this is for

Owners who are thinking of painting a house red, and owners of red houses who want to try a new trim or door color first.

Frequently asked questions

What color trim goes with a red house?

White is what the photos show most. Example 2 above asked for cream trim, and the model made it a pale butter yellow.

What roof color goes with a red house?

Dark gray and black roofs are the most common in the photo galleries we checked.

Can the AI show red on my house?

Yes. Upload a photo of the front of your house, name the red and say what must stay the same, such as the trim, the door and the roof. The result is a picture of the idea, not a paint match.

Is this tool free?

Signing up is free and gives you 5 credits, which is enough for 2 renders in most countries. Free renders carry an AiExterior watermark. If you want more renders or clean images, paid plans are available on the pricing page.

Do I need an account?

Yes. You need to sign in before a render starts, with an email code or your Google account.
