Composite Siding Ideas: Looks to Try on Your House Before You Buy

Composite siding is made from more than one material, and many products are designed to look like wood, shingles or painted boards. Before you order, you can see how a clean lap, board and batten or wood-look finish could look on your own house with AI. This page explains what composite siding means, shows three looks on example houses and tells you what a render cannot show.

Before and after examples

Example images are AI-generated: both the sample houses and their redesigns. Results change from render to render, so treat them as concepts, not exact product matches.

AI-drawn generic stand-in of a small cottage with weathered gray painted wood lap siding that is peeling in patches, white trim, a wood front door and a dark gray roofBefore
The same cottage with clean, smooth, tan-brown lap siding and no peeling; trim, door and roof keptAfter
Example 1 (prompt 1 below; the before is an AI-drawn generic stand-in house, not a real photo): the peeling gray paint is gone and the walls now show clean, smooth horizontal lap boards. The color is a tan-brown, browner than the "warm gray" the prompt asked for. The white trim, the windows, the wood front door, the dark roof and the step stayed in place; the dry lawn is similar but was redrawn in places. The shadow of the tree still falls on the wall. The render shows a clean new look only; it cannot tell you whether a board is composite, wood or vinyl.
AI-drawn generic stand-in of a two-story house with beige horizontal vinyl-style siding, white trim, a white front door under a small gabled porch roof and a brown shingle roofBefore
The same house with deep green vertical board and batten siding on the main walls; trim, door and roof keptAfter
Example 2 (prompt 2 below; the before is an AI-drawn generic stand-in house, not a real photo): the beige horizontal siding on the main walls is now deep green vertical board and batten, with wide boards and thin battens. The two small gables, one above the porch and one at the top, are green but still show a horizontal or shingle-style texture, not board and batten. The white trim, the windows, the white door, the brown roof, the shrubs and the walkway stayed in place. Unrequested change: the lawn was redrawn with different mowing stripes.
AI-drawn generic stand-in of a one-story ranch house with plain white horizontal siding, black shutters and front door, a white garage door and a black roofBefore
The same house with orange-brown wood-look horizontal planks; shutters, doors and roof keptAfter
Example 3 (prompt 3 below; the before is an AI-drawn generic stand-in house, not a real photo): the white siding on the house, the garage walls and the two front gables is now a wood-look plank in an orange-brown tone, more orange than the "warm medium-brown" the prompt asked for, with only a faint grain. The black shutters, the black front door, the white garage door, the black roof and the driveway stayed in place. Unrequested change: the lawn was redrawn. Real wood-look composite varies by product, so use this only as a color and layout idea.

What the AI can and cannot do

It can redraw your house photo with a new siding look: a clean, smooth finish over worn paint, a different board direction, or a wood-like color, while usually keeping the windows, doors, roof and shape of the house.

It cannot tell a composite board from wood or vinyl, show a real product's texture, match a maker's color or price the work. The examples above also missed their color targets a little and moved some small details, as the captions say. Treat each result as a look to discuss with an installer.

What composite siding is

"Composite siding" is a broad term. According to Wikipedia's article on siding, various composite materials are used, including asphalt shingles, fiber cement, aluminum composite, fiberboard and hardboard. They can be shingles or boards, they are available in many styles, and they can mimic other siding options.

GroupWhat Wikipedia says
Fiber cementUsually made from cement, cellulose (wood), sand and water; coated or painted at the factory, or painted after installation. Popular for its realistic look, durability, low maintenance, fire resistance and light weight compared with traditional wood siding. It resists termites and rot and is impact resistant, but it rates poorly for thermal resistance and sound, so separate wall insulation is recommended, and it is heavy to handle.
Composites that contain wood fiberHave been shown to have problems with deterioration, delamination or loss of coating adhesion in certain climates or under certain conditions.
Newer non-wood synthetic sidingUsually made from non-wood materials such as polymeric resins, fiberglass, stone, sand and fly ash. Because the technology is new, lifespan can only be estimated and varieties and distribution are limited.

On cost, the same article says composites tend to cost less than wood but vary widely, as do installation, maintenance and repair needs. We give no prices here because they depend on the product and where you live.

Sources: Wikipedia, "Siding (construction)", section Composite siding, and "Fiber cement siding" (read October 15, 2026). Both articles carry a notice that they need more citations, so treat the details as a starting point and ask the manufacturer for the exact specification and warranty. Wikipedia's separate article on composite lumber, which is mostly about decking, notes that some wood-plastic composite can have a plastic-like look even when molded with a wood grain pattern; that is a reason to see a real sample of any board you are considering.

If you want a side-by-side of vinyl, wood, fiber cement and other materials, the types of siding guide covers them. This page is about how a composite look can fit your house.

Three composite siding looks to try

  • Clean lap over worn paint. Example 1 replaces peeling painted wood with smooth, even boards. If your siding is flaking, this is the look a re-side promises. Our lap siding ideas page covers board profiles.
  • Board and batten. Example 2 swaps horizontal siding for wide vertical boards with thin battens. The vertical siding ideas page has more on direction and where to use it.
  • Wood-look planks. Example 3 puts a wood-colored plank on a white house. If you want this look in real life, see a sample in daylight, because the finish matters as much as the color.

How to try a composite siding look on your house

The examples were run directly on an image model, not through this tool, so your results will look different.

  1. Photograph the front in daylight, straight on, from far enough back that the whole house fits in the frame.
  2. Open the photo enhancer, upload your photo, keep Standard Enhancement and click Generate Enhancement.
  3. Click Edit and paste one of the prompts below into Edit Instructions. Describe the look in plain words (board direction, color, smooth or wood-grain) and list what must stay the same.
  4. Check the whole image. Look at the gables, the trim and the windows, and run it again if something moved.

The enhancement and the edit each use credits, so this route uses both free renders. To restyle the whole outside at once, use the exterior designer.

The exact prompts behind the examples

These are the edit prompts used for the three examples, word for word. Change the color and the list of what stays to suit your house.

Prompt 1: clean smooth lap boards

Change only the wall siding: replace the weathered peeling gray painted wood lap siding on every wall with clean, smooth, evenly colored warm gray horizontal lap boards of the same width. Keep the white window trim, every window, the wood front door, the dark gray roof, the house's exact shape, the porch step, the lawn, the sky and the camera angle exactly the same.

Prompt 2: board and batten in deep green

Change only the wall siding: replace the beige horizontal siding on every wall with vertical board and batten siding (wide vertical boards with thin battens) in a deep forest green. Keep the white window trim, every window, the white front door, the dark brown roof, the house's exact shape, the walkway, the lawn, the sky and the camera angle exactly the same.

Prompt 3: wood-grain planks

Change only the wall siding: replace the plain white horizontal siding on every wall of the house and garage with warm medium-brown wood-grain horizontal planks, with a visible wood grain texture. Keep the black window frames, the black front door, the white garage door, the black roof, the house's exact shape, the driveway, the lawn, the sky and the camera angle exactly the same.

Before you buy

  • Ask exactly what the product is. "Composite" can mean fiber cement, an engineered wood product or a synthetic board, and each has different care and warranty terms.
  • Get a real sample and look at it in daylight, next to your roof and trim.
  • Check your HOA or town. Some limit exterior materials and colors.
  • Get two or three local quotes and show them the render.

Who this is for

Homeowners whose siding is worn or peeling and who are thinking about a re-side, people who want a wood look without choosing wood, and anyone comparing a few siding styles who wants to see them on their own house first.

Frequently asked questions

What is composite siding?

It is a group of siding made from more than one material rather than a single one. Wikipedia lists asphalt shingles, fiber cement, aluminum composite, fiberboard and hardboard among them, and says they can come as shingles or boards and mimic other siding options. Fiber cement, for example, is usually made from cement, cellulose (wood), sand and water. Because the name covers many products, check exactly what your installer means.

Can composite siding look like wood?

Yes, that is a common reason to choose it. Wikipedia says composite sidings are available in many styles and can mimic other siding options, and that fiber cement is popular for its realistic look. How close it looks varies by product, so look at a real sample.

Is composite siding better than wood or vinyl?

It depends on the product, the climate and your budget, and we do not rank them here. Wikipedia notes that costs of composites tend to be lower than wood but vary widely, and that composite products containing wood fiber have had problems with deterioration, delamination or loss of coating adhesion in certain climates. Ask the maker for the warranty terms of the exact product.

Can I preview composite siding on my own house?

You can preview the look: color, board direction and a wood-like or smooth finish. The AI does not know which board is composite, so it draws a look, not a product. Use the render to decide on a style, then get product samples from an installer.

Is this tool free?

Signing up is free and gives you 5 credits, which is enough for 2 renders in most countries. Free renders carry an AiExterior watermark. If you want more renders or clean images, paid plans are available on the pricing page.

Do I need an account?

Yes. You need to sign in before a render starts, with an email code or your Google account.

Will the render show what composite siding costs?

No. It shows a possible look, not a price. Composite products and installation costs vary widely, so ask local installers for quotes.

Does it keep my windows and roof in place?

It aims to, and in the examples above the windows, roof and doors stayed in place, but the AI can change small details such as the lawn or a gable texture. Check the whole image and run it again with a clearer list of what must stay if something moved.
