French Country Exterior Colors: Try Sage or Blue-Gray Shutters on Yours

Free sign-up with email or Google. You get 2 free renders in most countries; free renders are watermarked.

French country exteriors are mostly pale, warm stone or stucco with soft, washed shutter and door colors. Upload a photo of your house below to try shutter, door and wall colors on it, then see what the guides suggest and two before and after examples.

Before and after examples

Example images are AI-generated: both the sample houses and their redesigns. Results change from render to render, so treat them as concepts, not exact product matches.

AI-drawn generic stand-in of a two-story French country house with warm beige stucco walls, dark burgundy-brown shutters on every window, a wooden front door with a stone surround, a gray slate roof and two chimneysBefore
The same house with soft sage green shutters and door; beige stucco and slate roof keptAfter
Example 1 (prompt 1 below; the before is an AI-drawn generic stand-in house, not a real photo): the shutters on every window and the front door are now a soft sage green, a little mintier than we expected. The beige stucco walls, the stone door surround, the slate roof and the chimneys stayed in place. We saw no unrequested changes.
AI-drawn generic stand-in of a two-story French country house with white stucco walls, black shutters on every window, a black front door, a steep dark roof and two brick chimneysBefore
The same house with light blue shutters and a soft blue-gray door; white walls and roof keptAfter
Example 2 (prompt 2 below; the before is an AI-drawn generic stand-in house, not a real photo): the black shutters are now a light blue, bluer than the blue-gray we asked for, and the front door is a soft blue-gray. The white stucco walls, the roof, the chimneys and the windows stayed in place. We saw no unrequested changes.

What the AI can and cannot do

It can repaint the shutters and the door and keep the walls and the roof, so you can compare soft French country colors on your own house.

It cannot match a paint chip exactly. It also struggled with a pale cream wall: when we first asked for cream walls in Example 2, it painted them butter yellow twice, so the final prompt keeps the walls white. Treat each result as a direction, then test real samples.

What published guides suggest for a French country exterior

These points come from Hello Lovely Studio (posts on country French and modern French paint colors) and Living North (a French country colour guide). The table below is our own summary, not a quote from either. They are design opinions, not rules.

Part of the schemeSummary
WallsPale, warm stone or stucco is the common base.
ShuttersLight green shutters on a stone farmhouse; a soft sage that floats between green, gray and blue is one suggestion.
DoorPainting the door to match the shutters calms the look, though it is less common in the US.
PaletteBlue, gray, cream, green and pink, but soft and slightly washed, not bright.

Where this page sits among the color pages

This page is about French country colors. For shutters on any house, see shutter colors, for stucco walls, see stucco house colors, and for a cottage, see cottage exterior colors.

Two French country color ideas to try

The examples were run directly on an image model, not through the tool above, so your results will look different.

  • Sage green shutters and door. Example 1 keeps warm beige stucco and paints the shutters and the door a soft sage green.
  • Blue-gray shutters on white. Example 2 keeps white stucco and turns the black shutters and door a soft blue-gray.

How to try it on your house

  1. Photograph the front in daylight, straight on, from far enough back that the whole house, the roof and the trim fit in the frame.
  2. Upload it in the tool at the top of this page, or open the exterior designer, and name the colors you want and the parts they go on.
  3. Say what stays. List the parts you are keeping, such as the trim, the roof and the windows, as the prompts below do.
  4. Check the whole image. Look at the trim, the door and the roof edges, since the model sometimes repaints a part you did not name, and run it again if something is off.

The exact prompts behind the examples

These are the edit prompts used for the two examples, word for word. Change the colors and the list of what stays to suit your house.

Prompt 1: dark shutters to soft sage green

Repaint ONLY the shutters and the front door a soft sage green. Keep the beige stucco walls and the slate roof. Keep everything else unchanged: the roof, every window position, the shrubs, the lawn, the sky and the camera angle.

Prompt 2: black shutters to soft blue-gray

Keep the white stucco walls. Repaint ONLY the shutters and the front door a soft muted blue-gray. Keep the steep dark roof. Keep everything else unchanged: the roof, every window position, the shrubs, the lawn, the sky and the camera angle.

Before you paint

  • Go softer than you think. The guides describe French country colors as washed and muted; a bright chip will look loud on shutters.
  • Match the door to the shutters if you want the calm look the guides describe.
  • Test real samples on a shutter and on the wall, and look at them in morning and evening light.

Who this is for

Frequently asked questions

What shutter colors are French country?

Soft greens such as sage, soft blue-grays and other washed colors are what the guides we checked suggest.

Should the door match the shutters?

One designer likes matching them because it calms the facade, while noting it is less common in the US. Both examples above match them.

Can the AI show these colors on my house?

Yes. Upload a photo of the front, name the shutter, door and wall colors and say what must stay. The result is a picture of the idea, not a paint match.

Is this tool free?

Signing up is free and gives you 5 credits, which is enough for 2 renders in most countries. Free renders carry an AiExterior watermark. If you want more renders or clean images, paid plans are available on the pricing page.

Do I need an account?

Yes. You need to sign in before a render starts, with an email code or your Google account.
