Before and after examples

Example images are AI-generated: both the sample houses and their redesigns. Results change from render to render, so treat them as concepts, not exact product matches.

AI-drawn generic stand-in of a two-story house with tan horizontal siding, a covered front porch with white columns and railing, white trim, a dark brown front door, a brown garage door on the left and a brown shingle roofBefore
The same house with textured white walls, black window frames and a black garage door; the dark brown front door, white porch columns and trim and the brown roof keptAfter
Example 1 (prompt 1 below; the before is an AI-drawn generic stand-in house, not a real photo): the tan siding became white walls with a light texture, the window frames went black and the garage door went black. The dark brown front door, the white porch columns and trim and the roof were kept. Side effects: the garage door still has raised panels, not the flat look we asked for, and the walls read more like painted siding than a real stucco finish; the lawn also looks slightly different. The pitched roof and two-story shape stayed, so it is a modern color scheme on a traditional shape.
AI-drawn generic stand-in of a one-story house with light gray siding, white shutters and trim, a gray front door, a gray garage door and a gray shingle roofBefore
The same house with an orange-brown vertical wood strip around the front door and a patch of the same wood on the wall above the left side of the garage door; everything else grayAfter
Example 2 (prompt 2 below; the before is an AI-drawn generic stand-in house, not a real photo): vertical wood panels now surround the front door, which is the accent the sources describe. Side effects: the wood also appears as a separate patch of wall above the left side of the garage door, which we did not ask for and which ends in the middle of the wall; and the color is a strong orange-brown, not a subtle warm tone. The gray siding, white trim, doors and roof were kept.
AI-drawn generic stand-in of a two-story house with cream vinyl-style siding, gray shutters, a burgundy front door with a wreath, a cream garage door and a gray roofBefore
The same house with deep charcoal siding on every wall, a honey-toned wood front door with the wreath still on it, a dark gray garage door, gray shutters and white trimAfter
Example 3 (prompt 3 below; the before is an AI-drawn generic stand-in house, not a real photo): the cream siding is now a deep charcoal on every wall, and the burgundy front door is now a honey-toned wood. Side effects: the garage door also changed from cream to dark gray to match the walls, which the prompt did not ask for; the gray shutters stayed, so they are now lighter than the walls; and the lantern beside the door is less visible. The white trim, the roof and the wreath were kept.

What the AI can and cannot do

It can change the wall color, add a cladding such as vertical wood slats, recolor windows and doors and keep the shape of your house, so you can see a modern palette on your own photo.

It cannot turn a pitched roof into a flat one, add walls of glass or design a house. It also adds small unrequested changes: in our examples a wood patch appeared above the garage and the garage door changed color. Check the whole image and name every part you want to keep.

What modern exterior sources say

The points below come from three published sources: brick&batten, "Modern House Facade Ideas We LOVE" (by Alexis Bishop, December 22, 2025; brick&batten sells custom exterior design services including renderings from your photos); GenRoom (published March 26, 2026 and updated October 15, 2026, no author named; GenRoom sells AI tools that redesign house exteriors from a photo); and EYRC, "4 Modern Houses With Flat Roofs to Inspire Your Design" (July 12, 2021, no author named; EYRC is an architecture firm that sells residential design services). All three sell something related, so treat them as opinions, not rules.

Part of the houseWhat the sources say
Colorbrick&batten: cream siding with charcoal trim, or deep gray with warm wood accents, with high contrast so the architectural lines stand out. GenRoom: mostly monochrome (white, charcoal, black, warm gray), sometimes with a natural wood accent.
Materialsbrick&batten: smooth siding with vertical wood accents, stone with metal details, or stucco with warm wood or black steel, each material with a purpose. GenRoom: steel, concrete, glass, stucco, cedar or ipe cladding and metal panels such as zinc or Corten steel.
RoofGenRoom: flat or low-pitched roofs with deep overhangs. brick&batten: clean, simple rooflines with sharp corners. EYRC: a flat roof keeps clean lines and a lower visible profile.
WindowsGenRoom: floor-to-ceiling windows and glass walls. brick&batten: tall window groupings, or one oversized window as the bold feature.
Doors, trim and detailsbrick&batten: simple trim with no decorative molding; solid wood slab or oversized vertical front doors in deep colors like black, walnut or muted bronze; flat-panel or horizontal-slat garage doors with wood-look finishes; matte black or brushed metal light fixtures; and one bold feature.
ClimateEYRC: flat roofs suit warmer areas where snow is rare and pitched roofs shed snow in colder regions. GenRoom: modern style suits mild regions, large glass can be costly to heat or cool in extreme weather without high-performance glazing, and flat roofs need more attention to drainage.

What a photo edit can and cannot make modern

Most of what the sources list as modern is built, not painted: roof shape, overhangs, floor-to-ceiling glass. A photo edit keeps your house as it is, so the list it can show is shorter: wall color, a wood or stucco-look cladding, trim and window color, and the front and garage doors. That is still a lot of the look. Deep gray with a wood accent, white walls with black windows, and a dark or wood-toned door are all surface changes. For the shape of the house, see exterior house design and modern farmhouse exterior.

Three modern changes to try

The examples were run directly on an image model, not through the tool above, so your results will look different.

  • White walls with black openings. Example 1 pairs white walls with black windows and a black garage door. See also white house with black trim and black house exterior ideas.
  • A wood slat entry. Example 2 adds vertical wood around the front door as the one warm accent. The result shows how a wood accent can spill onto parts of the wall you did not choose.
  • Deep gray with a wood door. Example 3 puts a wood-toned door on deep charcoal walls, the pairing brick&batten describes. See front door colors and garage door colors.

How to try a modern look on your house

  1. Photograph the front in daylight, straight on, from far enough back that the whole house fits in the frame.
  2. Upload it in the tool at the top of this page, or open the exterior designer, choose a style and click generate.
  3. Name the parts and the look and list what must stay the same, like the prompts below.
  4. Check the whole image. Look at the shutters, doors, trim and roof, and run it again if something changed that you did not ask for.

The exact prompts behind the examples

These are the edit prompts used for the three examples, word for word. Change the parts, the look and the list of what stays to suit your house.

Prompt 1: white stucco look, black windows, black garage door

Restyle the walls and openings only: change the beige siding on every wall to smooth white stucco, change the window frames to black and change the garage door to a flat black garage door. Keep the house shape, the roof, the front door position, the lawn, the driveway and the camera angle exactly the same.

Prompt 2: vertical wood slats around the front door

Change ONLY the wall section around the front door: clad that section of wall in warm vertical wood slat panels. Keep the light gray siding on every other wall, the trim, the front door, the garage door, the roof, the lawn, the driveway and the camera angle exactly the same.

Prompt 3: deep charcoal walls and a wood front door

Change ONLY the wall color and the front door: repaint the cream siding on every wall, including the garage wall, a deep charcoal gray, and change the front door to natural warm wood. Keep the white trim, the garage door shape, the roof, the lawn, the driveway and the camera angle exactly the same.

Before you build or repaint

  • Check the climate. The sources say flat roofs and large glass suit mild climates and need drainage and glazing planning.
  • Ask a contractor or designer about materials, local rules and what your house can support.
  • Check your HOA or town for exterior color and material rules.

Who this is for

Frequently asked questions

Can I try a modern look on a photo of my own house?

Yes. Upload a photo of the front of your house in the tool at the top of this page, say what to change (wall color, cladding, doors, trim) and list what must stay the same. Free accounts get 2 free renders in most countries; free renders are watermarked.

Can the AI change my house into a flat-roof modern house?

Not reliably, and you should not expect it to. The AI recolors and re-clads what is already in the photo. In our three examples the house shape, the pitched roof and the window positions stayed the same, so the changes were color, cladding and doors. Changing a roofline or adding large glass walls is architecture work, not a photo edit.

What do the sources say makes an exterior modern?

GenRoom lists flat or low-pitched roofs with deep overhangs, floor-to-ceiling windows, materials such as steel, concrete, stucco, cedar or ipe cladding and metal panels, and a mostly monochrome palette with sometimes a natural wood accent. brick&batten recommends clean, simple rooflines, high-contrast color pairs such as cream siding with charcoal trim or deep gray with warm wood accents, simple trim with no decorative molding, vertical elements and one bold feature.

Which parts of a modern look can a photo edit show?

The parts that are surface: wall color, cladding such as wood slats or smooth stucco-look walls, trim, window frame color and doors. From the brick&batten and GenRoom lists, these include a deep gray with warm wood accents, black windows, a dark or wood-toned front door and a garage door that blends into the walls.

Are flat roofs right for every climate?

The sources say no. EYRC says pitched roofs shed snow and ice, so they suit colder or mountain regions, while flat roofs suit warmer areas like Southern California where snow is rare. GenRoom says modern style is best suited to mild regions, that large glass areas can be costly to heat or cool in extreme weather unless high-performance glazing is used, and that flat roofs need more attention to drainage than pitched roofs.

Will the picture match what a builder can do?

It is a preview, not a plan. The AI draws a look from your description and may change small things you did not ask for, like the wood patch in our second example. Check the whole image, then talk to a contractor or designer about materials, local rules and what your house can support.

Does a modern exterior need a black front door?

No. brick&batten names deep colors like black, walnut or muted bronze and solid wood slab doors as modern choices. Example 3 on this page uses a wood-toned door against dark gray walls.
