Cottage Exterior Colors: Try Sage, Pale Blue or Cream on Your House

Free sign-up with email or Google. You get 2 free renders in most countries; free renders are watermarked.

Cottages are small, often with a steep gable, a little porch and flower boxes, and their palettes are soft colors with one cheerful accent. Upload a photo of your house below to try a cottage palette on it, then see what published guides suggest and three before and after examples.

Small house exterior colors

Before and after examples

Example images are AI-generated: both the sample houses and their redesigns. Results change from render to render, so treat them as concepts, not exact product matches.

AI-drawn generic stand-in of a one-and-a-half story cottage with a steep gable, beige siding, white trim, a brick chimney, a white front door and a white picket fenceBefore
The same cottage with sage green siding, light trim and a red front door; roof, chimney and picket fence keptAfter
Example 1 (prompt 1 below; the before is an AI-drawn generic stand-in house, not a real photo): the beige siding is now soft sage green, the trim and window frames are a light cream close to white, and the front door is red. The gray roof, the brick chimney, the white picket fence, the flowers, the lawn and the path stayed in place. Not changed: the small gray hood over the door kept its color, which we did not mention.
AI-drawn generic stand-in of a single-story cottage with a front gable, a small covered porch, tan siding and trim, a brown roof and flower boxes under the windowsBefore
The same cottage with powder blue siding, white trim and porch posts and a yellow front door; roof and flower boxes keptAfter
Example 2 (prompt 2 below; the before is an AI-drawn generic stand-in house, not a real photo): the tan siding, including the shingled front gable, is now pale powder blue, the trim, the gable edges and the porch posts are white, and the front door is sunny yellow. The brown roof, the flower boxes, the window positions, the lawn and the path stayed in place. We saw no unrequested changes.
AI-drawn generic stand-in of a small cottage with a steep front gable, an arched front door, light gray siding and trim, no shutters, a gray roof and a stone pathBefore
The same cottage with cream siding, dark green shutters beside the front windows and a dark green arched front door; roof and path keptAfter
Example 3 (prompt 3 below; the before is an AI-drawn generic stand-in house, not a real photo): the gray siding is now cream, dark green shutters were added beside both front windows, and the arched front door is dark green. The gray roof, the stone path, the window positions and the lawn stayed in place. Partly followed: the window trim went light, but the trim around the gable vent and the door arch stayed gray instead of white. The cream reads a little yellow.

What the AI can and cannot do

It can repaint the siding, the trim, the door and shutters in your photo, add shutters where you ask for them, and leave the roof, the windows and the garden as they are, so you can compare cottage palettes on your own house.

It cannot match a paint chip exactly or show how a soft color fades in strong sun. As the captions say, it can also leave a small trim detail in its old color. Treat each result as a direction, then test real samples.

What published guides suggest for cottage colors

These points come from WOW 1 DAY Painting (two articles on cottage colors), Pine & Prospect Home, Sunset and Composite Paint. The table below is our own summary of the ideas they share, not a quote from any one of them. They are design opinions, not rules.

SchemeSummary
Soft yellowPale yellow siding with white trim and a red or blue door.
White with accentsA white body with navy trim or red and blue accents.
GrayA washed-out gray by the beach or a deeper gray in the woods, with crisp white trim.
Sage or pastel blueSage green or pale blue with white trim and darker shutters.
WoodStained wood siding with white trim.
Door and shuttersThe door is where the guides put the cheerful color: red, blue, yellow or green. Blue shutters and Dutch doors come up too.
Test firstPaint large swatches. One guide says to go a few shades darker than you think, because sun washes color out; another notes that bright yellow fades fast.

Where this page sits among the color pages

This page is about whole-house palettes on a cottage. For small houses that are not cottage style, see small house exterior colors. For a cottage near the water, see beach house exterior colors, and for a cottage in the woods, see cabin exterior ideas.

Three cottage schemes to try

The examples were run directly on an image model, not through the tool above, so your results will look different.

  • Sage with cream and a red door. Example 1 turns a beige cottage sage green, with light trim and a red door behind the white picket fence.
  • Pale blue with a yellow door. Example 2 turns a tan cottage powder blue, with white trim and a sunny yellow door.
  • Cream with green shutters. Example 3 turns a gray cottage cream, adds dark green shutters and paints the arched door green.

How to try it on your house

  1. Photograph the front in daylight, straight on, from far enough back that the whole house, the roof and the trim fit in the frame.
  2. Upload it in the tool at the top of this page, or open the exterior designer, and name the body, trim and door colors and which parts get each.
  3. Say what stays. List the roof, the chimney, the fence, the flower boxes and the windows to keep, as the prompts below do.
  4. Check the whole image. Look at the small trim details, the shutters and the door, and run it again if something changed that you did not ask for.

The exact prompts behind the examples

These are the edit prompts used for the three examples, word for word. Change the colors and the list of what stays to suit your house.

Prompt 1: sage, cream and red

Repaint ONLY the house: soft sage green siding, cream trim and window frames, a red front door. Keep the gray roof, the brick chimney, the white picket fence, the flowers, the lawn, the path, the sky and the camera angle exactly the same.

Prompt 2: powder blue, white and yellow

Repaint ONLY the house: pale powder blue siding, white trim, white porch posts, a sunny yellow front door. Keep the brown roof, the flower boxes, every window position, the lawn, the path, the sky and the camera angle exactly the same.

Prompt 3: cream with dark green shutters

Repaint ONLY the house: cream siding, white trim, dark green shutters added beside each front window, a dark green arched front door. Keep the gray roof, the stone path, every window position, the lawn, the path, the sky and the camera angle exactly the same.

Before you paint

  • Test real samples on the body, the trim and the door, and look at them in morning and afternoon light before you buy paint.
  • Pull accents from the garden. The guides suggest taking door and shutter colors from the plants and surroundings.
  • Think about fading. Soft and bright colors can fade in full sun, so ask your paint store about exterior lines for strong light.

Who this is for

Frequently asked questions

What colors suit a cottage exterior?

The guides cited on this page show soft yellow, white, gray, sage and pale blue bodies, usually with white trim and one cheerful color on the door or shutters.

What door color goes on a cottage?

Red, blue, yellow and green doors all appear in the guides. Examples 1 to 3 above show a red, a yellow and a dark green door.

Should a cottage be painted light or dark?

Most of the guides use light, soft bodies, and one notes that light colors make a small house look bigger. Another says to pick a few shades darker than the swatch you like, because sun washes color out. Test samples on your own wall.

Can the AI add shutters to my cottage?

Often, yes. In Example 3 the model added dark green shutters beside each front window. Name the shutter color and which windows get them, and check that every window you meant is covered.

Can the AI show a cottage palette on my house?

Yes. Upload a photo of the front of your house, name the body, trim and door colors, and list what must stay the same. The result is a picture of the idea, not a paint match.

Is this tool free?

Signing up is free and gives you 5 credits, which is enough for 2 renders in most countries. Free renders carry an AiExterior watermark. If you want more renders or clean images, paid plans are available on the pricing page.

Do I need an account?

Yes. You need to sign in before a render starts, with an email code or your Google account.
