Mediterranean House Exterior Colors: Try Warm White or Butterscotch Stucco

Free sign-up with email or Google. You get 2 free renders in most countries; free renders are watermarked.

On a Mediterranean house, the stucco color has to work with a roof you are not changing: the clay tile. Upload a photo of your house below to try stucco and trim colors on it, then see what paint makers and designers suggest and two before and after examples.

Stucco house colors

Before and after examples

Example images are AI-generated: both the sample houses and their redesigns. Results change from render to render, so treat them as concepts, not exact product matches.

AI-drawn generic stand-in of a two-story Mediterranean-style house with beige stucco walls, arched windows with beige trim, a wooden front door and an orange clay tile roofBefore
The same house with warm white stucco and dark espresso brown trim around the arched windows; wooden door and tile roof keptAfter
Example 1 (prompt 1 below; the before is an AI-drawn generic stand-in house, not a real photo): the beige stucco is now a warm white and the trim around the arched windows is dark espresso brown. The wooden door, the orange tile roof and the windows stayed in place. Not asked for: the board under the roof edge turned dark brown too.
AI-drawn generic stand-in of a one-story Mediterranean-style house with cool gray stucco walls, white window trim, a black front door and an orange clay tile roofBefore
The same house with butterscotch yellow stucco; white trim, black door and tile roof keptAfter
Example 2 (prompt 2 below; the before is an AI-drawn generic stand-in house, not a real photo): the gray stucco walls are now a butterscotch yellow, a little closer to mustard than we expected. The white window trim, the black door, the orange tile roof and the windows stayed in place. We saw no unrequested changes.

What the AI can and cannot do

It can repaint the stucco walls and the window trim and keep the clay tile roof and the door, so you can compare schemes on your own house.

It cannot match a paint chip exactly or show stucco texture changes. When you ask for new trim it may also paint nearby parts, such as the roof edge in Example 1. Treat each result as a direction, then test real samples.

What published guides suggest for a Mediterranean house

These points come from Dunn-Edwards (its Mediterranean and Spanish house palettes) and designer Maria Killam (on choosing colors around orange tile roofs). The table below is our own summary, not a quote from either. They are design opinions, not rules.

Part of the schemeSummary
PaletteEarthy reds and browns, mid-tone blue-greens and dark grays are typical Mediterranean colors.
Warm whiteA warm white stucco with a darker trim, such as a red or an espresso brown, is a classic scheme.
Neutral takeA historic white stucco with a taupe-brown trim and muted shutters is a more modern option.
Orange tile roofWith orange-toned tile, Killam suggests yellow, white, blue, or peach and butterscotch shades.
Watch outSome trendy neutrals and older Tuscan browns or 1990s sage greens can clash with orange tile.

Where this page sits among the color pages

This page is about Mediterranean-style houses with clay tile roofs. For stucco houses of any style, see stucco house colors, and for roof color pairings, see house colors with a red roof.

Two Mediterranean color ideas to try

The examples were run directly on an image model, not through the tool above, so your results will look different.

  • Warm white with dark brown trim. Example 1 turns beige stucco warm white and paints the arched window trim espresso brown.
  • Butterscotch walls. Example 2 turns cool gray stucco a butterscotch yellow under an orange tile roof.

How to try it on your house

  1. Photograph the front in daylight, straight on, from far enough back that the whole house, the roof and the trim fit in the frame.
  2. Upload it in the tool at the top of this page, or open the exterior designer, and name the colors you want and the parts they go on.
  3. Say what stays. List the parts you are keeping, such as the trim, the roof and the windows, as the prompts below do.
  4. Check the whole image. Look at the trim, the door and the roof edges, since the model sometimes repaints a part you did not name, and run it again if something is off.

The exact prompts behind the examples

These are the edit prompts used for the two examples, word for word. Change the colors and the list of what stays to suit your house.

Prompt 1: beige stucco to warm white with espresso trim

Repaint the stucco walls a warm white and the window trim a dark espresso brown. Keep the wooden front door and the orange clay tile roof. Keep everything else unchanged: the roof, every window position, the shrubs, the lawn, the sky and the camera angle.

Prompt 2: gray stucco to butterscotch

Repaint ONLY the stucco walls a soft butterscotch yellow. Keep the white window trim, the dark door and the orange clay tile roof. Keep everything else unchanged: the roof, every window position, the shrubs, the lawn, the sky and the camera angle.

Before you paint

  • Start from the tile. Hold samples up against the roof tile, since you are keeping it.
  • Test on the stucco itself. Textured stucco reads darker than a smooth chip.
  • Check HOA rules. Many tile-roof neighborhoods have approved color lists.

Frequently asked questions

What colors go with an orange tile roof?

Designer Maria Killam suggests yellow, white, blue, or peach and butterscotch shades. Example 2 above tries butterscotch.

What trim goes with white Mediterranean stucco?

Dunn-Edwards shows warm white stucco with a red trim, or with a dark espresso brown, which Example 1 tries.

Can the AI keep my tile roof?

Yes. Say in the prompt that the clay tile roof stays the same. Both examples above kept it.
