Before and after examples

Example images are AI-generated: both the sample houses and their redesigns. Results change from render to render, so treat them as concepts, not exact product matches.

AI-drawn generic stand-in of a two-story house with medium gray lap siding, white trim, a black roof and a white front doorBefore
The same house with medium gray siding and black window trim, corner boards and garage trim; the black roof and white door keptAfter
Example 1 (prompt 1 below; the before is an AI-drawn generic stand-in house, not a real photo): the trim around the windows, the corner boards and the garage became black on medium gray siding, as asked. The black roof and the white front door look the same.
AI-drawn generic stand-in of a colonial house with dusty blue lap siding, white trim, a gray roof and a red front doorBefore
The same house with dusty blue siding and bright yellow trim, with yellow porch columns and rails; the gray roof and red door keptAfter
Example 2 (prompt 2 below; the before is an AI-drawn generic stand-in house, not a real photo): we asked for warm cream trim, but the trim came out bright yellow, and the porch columns and rails turned yellow as well. The dusty blue siding, the gray roof and the red door look the same. This is a miss, so name the exact shade and what must stay.
AI-drawn generic stand-in of a two-story house with white lap siding, white trim, a gray roof and a black front doorBefore
The same house with white siding and black trim, window frames, fascia and porch posts; the black door keptAfter
Example 3 (prompt 3 below; the before is an AI-drawn generic stand-in house, not a real photo): white siding kept its color, but the trim, window frames, fascia and porch posts all went black, beyond the trim we named, and the roof reads darker. The front door stays black.

What the AI can and cannot do

It can recolor the siding in your photo while usually keeping the shape of the house, so you can compare colors before you order samples.

It cannot guarantee that only the trim changes. In our examples a warm cream trim request came out bright yellow, and a charcoal trim request also blackened window frames and porch posts. Check the whole image and name every part that must stay the same.

How to choose siding and trim colors

The points below come from James Hardie, LP, Rollex, Allura and Gentek (all siding makers or sellers) and Brick and Batten (a design blog). Most of them sell siding. Sources were read on 24 October 2026. Some of them sell siding or lead homeowners to local pros, so treat the color advice as sales-adjacent.

QuestionWhat the sources say
The safe choiceWhite trim is called the safest and most popular and suits nearly any siding (James Hardie, Allura). We have no data to prove "most popular".
Classic pairsBlue or gray siding with white trim (James Hardie, Rollex). Beige siding with brown trim, green siding with beige trim (Rollex).
WarmthTan trim on white siding adds warmth; beige trim on red siding avoids a barn look (James Hardie).
Strong contrastLP shows a pairing of Desert Stone siding with Abyss Black trim.
Tone-on-toneTrim the same shade as the siding, or a few shades lighter or darker (LP). Gentek warns it can flatten architectural detail, while contrast shows detail off.
Order of choicesPick the siding first, then the trim (Rollex).

Three trim colors to try

  • Black window trim and corner boards. Example 1 puts black trim on medium gray siding, as asked.
  • Warm cream trim. Example 2 turned the trim bright yellow instead, and the porch columns and rails also turned yellow.
  • Dark charcoal trim. Example 3 made the trim, window frames, fascia and porch posts black, and the roof reads darker.

How to try a siding color on your house

The examples were run directly on an image model, not through the tool above, so your results will look different.

  1. Photograph the front in daylight, straight on, with the whole house in the frame.
  2. Upload it in the tool at the top of this page, or open the exterior designer, and choose a style.
  3. Name the color and what must stay the same, like the prompts below.
  4. Compare two or three colors and note which parts moved.

The exact prompts behind the examples

These are the edit prompts used for the three examples, word for word. Swap in the color and the list of what stays.

Prompt 1: black trim on gray siding

Change ONLY the color of the trim only: repaint the window trim, corner boards and garage trim black. Keep the gray siding, the black roof, the white front door, the driveway and the lawn exactly the same, and keep the camera angle.

Prompt 2: warm cream trim on dusty blue siding

Change ONLY the color of the trim only: repaint the window trim and corner boards a warm cream. Keep the blue siding, the gray roof, the red front door, the walkway and the lawn exactly the same, and keep the camera angle.

Prompt 3: dark charcoal trim on white siding

Change ONLY the color of the trim only: repaint the window trim and corner boards a dark charcoal gray. Keep the white siding, the gray roof, the black front door, the walkway and the lawn exactly the same, and keep the camera angle.

Before you order siding

  • Choose the siding first, then the trim.
  • Look at real samples of both side by side outdoors.
  • Decide whether windows, fascia, corner boards, porch posts and the garage trim all share one color.
  • Check your HOA or town for color rules.

Who this is for

Homeowners who already have a siding color in mind and want to compare trim colors on their own house before ordering paint or paying a contractor.

Frequently asked questions

What trim color goes with gray siding?

James Hardie and Rollex both pair gray siding with white trim. LP names black, off-white or dark gray trim for gray siding and advises against beige.

Should trim be lighter or darker than siding?

Either works. Contrast shows architectural detail, while trim a few shades from the siding gives a tone-on-tone look that Gentek says can flatten detail.

Is black trim on a white house still in style?

We have no style data. LP shows a dark siding and black trim pairing, and design sources call white siding with black trim a common modern farmhouse choice.

Does trim have to match the garage door?

No source we read sets a rule. Try it in a render and compare.

Can I see a siding and trim color on my own house first?

Yes. Upload a photo of your house in the tool at the top of this page and name the color to try. A render is a guide only; test real samples outdoors on all sides of the house.

Will the render match a real siding and trim color?

No, not exactly. In our examples the model drew its own idea of each color. Use the render to narrow your choices, then compare real color samples.

Is this tool free?

Signing up is free and gives you 5 credits, which is enough for 2 renders in most countries. Free renders carry an AiExterior watermark. If you want more renders or clean images, paid plans are available on the pricing page.

Do I need an account?

Yes. You need to sign in before a render starts, with an email code or your Google account.
