Before and after examples
Example images are AI-generated: both the sample houses and their redesigns. Results change from render to render, so treat them as concepts, not exact product matches.

Before
AfterWhat the AI can and cannot do
It can recolor the siding in your photo while usually keeping the shape of the house, so you can compare colors before you order samples.
It cannot show an exact shingle profile or a real ColorPlus color, keep a gable and a lower wall separate unless it follows the prompt, or follow every instruction exactly. In our examples one request for the gable only also changed the lower wall. Check the whole image.
AiExterior is not affiliated with James Hardie; brand names only describe the products.
How to choose a HardieShingle color
The points below come from James Hardie (the maker; its product pages), ProBuilder (a trade magazine), a retailer listing and Northwest Exteriors (an installer). The maker, the installer and the retailer sell the product, and some retail details are secondary. Sources were read on 24 October 2026. Some of them sell siding or lead homeowners to local pros, so treat the color advice as sales-adjacent.
| Question | What the sources say |
|---|---|
| Panels or single shingles? | HardieShingle comes as straight-edge and staggered-edge panels, plus individual shingles (James Hardie, ProBuilder). |
| Colors | Prefinished ColorPlus versions exist. A retailer listing shows straight-edge panels in Iron Gray, Night Gray, Gray Slate, Light Mist and Countrylane Red. A primed staggered-edge version exists for painting on site. Do not treat any list as final; availability varies. |
| Where shingle is used | Northwest Exteriors says shingle is used for dormers, gables and upper stories, with lap on the main body. |
| Mixing with lap | Using lap below and shingle above is a common look. Pick one color family so the break reads as texture, not as two houses. |
| Samples | James Hardie notes that samples ship in Select Cedarmill texture, not shingle texture. |
| Availability | The official page showed both panel types as unavailable for one area we checked, so confirm with a local dealer. |
Three HardieShingle colors to try
- Soft off-white. Example 1 turns gray shingle siding pale. It came out cream-yellow more than neutral white.
- Dark forest green on the gable. Example 2 turns the upper gable dark green. The lower lap siding turned green too, which we did not ask for.
- Soft sky blue. Example 3 turns weathered gray shingle walls light blue, with a mottled, stained look.
How to try a siding color on your house
The examples were run directly on an image model, not through the tool above, so your results will look different.
- Photograph the front in daylight, straight on, with the whole house in the frame.
- Upload it in the tool at the top of this page, or open the exterior designer, and choose a style.
- Name the color and what must stay the same, like the prompts below.
- Compare two or three colors and note which parts moved.
The exact prompts behind the examples
These are the edit prompts used for the three examples, word for word. Swap in the color and the list of what stays.
Prompt 1: soft off-white
Change ONLY the color of the shingle siding on the walls: repaint it a soft off-white. Keep the shingle texture, the white trim, the gray roof, the white front door and the lawn exactly the same, and keep the camera angle.
Prompt 2: dark forest green, gable only
Change ONLY the color of the shingle siding in the upper gable only: repaint it a dark forest green. Keep the lap siding below, the white trim, the brown roof, the front door and the lawn exactly the same, and keep the camera angle.
Prompt 3: soft sky blue
Change ONLY the color of the shingle siding on the walls: repaint it a soft sky blue. Keep the shingle texture, the white trim, the gray roof, the white front door and the lawn exactly the same, and keep the camera angle.
Before you order siding
- Order real samples; note that samples ship in Cedarmill texture, not shingle texture.
- Ask a dealer which profile (straight-edge, staggered-edge or single shingles) and which colors are sold near you.
- Check where the shingle ends and the lap starts, and how the trim meets both.
- Check your HOA or town for color rules.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between straight-edge and staggered-edge?
HardieShingle comes as straight-edge and staggered-edge panels, plus individual shingles. A straight-edge panel has an even bottom line; a staggered-edge panel has a varied one. Ask a dealer which profile is sold near you.
Can I mix shingle with lap siding?
Yes, it is a common look. Northwest Exteriors says lap is used for the main body and shingle for dormers, gables or upper stories.
Which colors come in shingle?
We cannot give a definitive list. A retailer listing shows straight-edge panels in Iron Gray, Night Gray, Gray Slate, Light Mist and Countrylane Red. Check a current dealer palette.
Do individual shingles come in the same colors as panels?
Not necessarily. Availability varies by profile and region, so confirm both with a dealer.
Can I see a HardieShingle color on my own house first?
Yes. Upload a photo of your house in the tool at the top of this page and name the color to try. A render is a guide only; test real samples outdoors on all sides of the house.
Will the render match a real HardieShingle color?
No, not exactly. In our examples the model drew its own idea of each color. Use the render to narrow your choices, then compare real color samples.
Is this tool free?
Signing up is free and gives you 5 credits, which is enough for 2 renders in most countries. Free renders carry an AiExterior watermark. If you want more renders or clean images, paid plans are available on the pricing page.
Do I need an account?
Yes. You need to sign in before a render starts, with an email code or your Google account.
