Before and after examples
Example images are AI-generated: both the sample houses and their redesigns. Results change from render to render, so treat them as concepts, not exact product matches.

Before
AfterWhat the AI can and cannot do
It can recolor the siding in your photo while usually keeping the shape of the house, so you can compare colors before you order samples.
It cannot match a real ColorPlus color, check what is stocked in your area, or follow every instruction exactly. In our examples the model drew its own version of each color, and one request for warm greige came out more olive. Check the whole image and name what must stay the same.

How to choose a Hardie board color
The points below come from James Hardie (the maker; its press and product pages), Northwest Exteriors (an installer), Brick and Batten (a design blog) and Kylie M Interiors (a design blog). The maker and the installer sell the product. Sources were read on 24 October 2026. Some of them sell siding or lead homeowners to local pros, so treat the color advice as sales-adjacent.
| Question | What the sources say |
|---|---|
| What is "Hardie board"? | The common name for James Hardie fiber cement siding (James Hardie). |
| Factory color or paint on site? | ColorPlus is a baked-on factory finish. The same siding also comes primed to be painted on site, which is the usual route for custom, historic or HOA-specified colors (James Hardie, Northwest Exteriors). |
| How many colors? | The Statement Collection holds up to 19 curated ColorPlus colors. The Dream Collection is made to order, US only, with nearly 700 colors (James Hardie, Northwest Exteriors). |
| Colors people name most | Arctic White, Iron Gray, Night Gray, Pearl Gray, Cobble Stone, Aged Pewter, Boothbay Blue, Mountain Sage, Timber Bark, Evening Blue, Monterey Taupe and Countrylane Red (Brick and Batten, Northwest Exteriors). |
| Texture | The same color can look different on smooth and wood-grain (Cedarmill) boards, and samples ship in Select Cedarmill texture (Northwest Exteriors, James Hardie). |
| Which profile where? | Lap for the main body, shingle for dormers, gables or upper stories, and vertical panel for gables or entries (Northwest Exteriors). |
| Availability | It varies by ZIP code, profile, texture and local distributor, so ask a dealer before you fall for one color (James Hardie, Northwest Exteriors). |
Three Hardie board colors to try
- Muted slate blue-gray. Example 1 turns tan siding blue-gray and leaves the white trim, roof and black door alone.
- Warm greige. Example 2 turns white siding into a warm neutral. It came out khaki-olive more than gray, so describe the undertone you want.
- Deep evergreen. Example 3 turns light gray siding dark green. The green front door stays visible but loses contrast.
How to try a siding color on your house
The examples were run directly on an image model, not through the tool above, so your results will look different.
- Photograph the front in daylight, straight on, with the whole house in the frame.
- Upload it in the tool at the top of this page, or open the exterior designer, and choose a style.
- Name the color and what must stay the same, like the prompts below.
- Compare two or three colors and note which parts moved.
The exact prompts behind the examples
These are the edit prompts used for the three examples, word for word. Swap in the color and the list of what stays.
Prompt 1: muted slate blue-gray
Change ONLY the color of the fiber cement lap siding: repaint it a muted slate blue-gray. Keep the white trim, the dark gray roof, the black front door, the driveway and the lawn exactly the same, and keep the camera angle.
Prompt 2: warm greige taupe
Change ONLY the color of the fiber cement lap siding: repaint it a warm greige taupe. Keep the white trim, the brown roof, the wood front door, the driveway and the lawn exactly the same, and keep the camera angle.
Prompt 3: deep evergreen
Change ONLY the color of the fiber cement lap siding: repaint it a deep evergreen green. Keep the white trim, the brown roof, the green front door, the driveway and the lawn exactly the same, and keep the camera angle.
Before you order siding
- Order real samples and look at them outdoors, on every side of the house.
- Ask a local dealer which colors, profiles and textures are available in your area.
- Decide between ColorPlus and primed boards. Primed means you pick the paint and take on the upkeep.
- Check your HOA or town for color rules.

Frequently asked questions
What colors does Hardie board come in?
James Hardie says its Statement Collection holds up to 19 ColorPlus colors, and the made-to-order Dream Collection (US only) has nearly 700. Availability varies by ZIP code, profile, texture and distributor, so check with a local dealer.
Is Hardie board pre-colored or painted on site?
Both exist. ColorPlus is a baked-on factory finish. Primed boards are painted on site in any paint color, and the owner handles the upkeep, according to Northwest Exteriors.
Which Hardie colors are most popular?
We have no sales data. Design sites keep naming Arctic White, Iron Gray, Night Gray, Pearl Gray, Cobble Stone and Aged Pewter. James Hardie named Iron Gray its 2026 Color of the Year.
Does texture change how the color looks?
Northwest Exteriors says the same color can look different on smooth and Cedarmill boards. James Hardie ships samples in Select Cedarmill texture, so look at a sample in the texture you plan to buy.
Can I see a Hardie board siding color on my own house first?
Yes. Upload a photo of your house in the tool at the top of this page and name the color to try. A render is a guide only; test real samples outdoors on all sides of the house.
Will the render match a real Hardie board siding color?
No, not exactly. In our examples the model drew its own idea of each color. Use the render to narrow your choices, then compare real color samples.
